Brian Ulrich is among the leading young photographers working in the United States today. His photographs have been exhibited extensively, including solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago (2005) and the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego (2006). His work has also been featured in numerous group exhibits, among others at The Art Institute of Chicago (2005) and the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago (2005). Ulrich is the subject of a volume of MP3: Midwest Photographers Publication Project (Aperture, 2006). His photographs have also appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, Artforum, Wired, and Adbusters. This month, the Chicago-based artist is featured in Harper's Magazine.

Brian Ulrich's exhibit "Melodramas of Consumption" presents a selection of his much-heralded series "Copia." The series is a response to the 2001 call for American citizens to flock to the malls to boost the U.S. economy through shopping. It takes the form of a long-term photographic examination of the peculiarities and complexities of our consumer-dominated world. Through large scale photographs taken within both the big-box retail stores and the thrift shops that house our recycled goods, Ulrich explores the everyday activities of shopping as well as the economic, cultural, social, and political implications of commercialism and the roles we play in self-destruction, over-consumption, and as targets of marketing and advertising.

Brian Ulrich's work is also featured in the show "Branded and On Display" which opens at the Krannert Art Museum on Thursday, January 25.

"Melodramas of Consumption" will be on view at the IPRH through March 2.
The IPRH is open from 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday.
