Will Ned be speaking at all on FCNL's Middle East related action? It doesn't appear so from the description below, but if he is, and if it is okay with the group, I'd like to send the announcement out on our UIUC S Asian/Middle East Studies list.

thanks
Marilyn Booth

> Ned Stowe is a legislative secretary and a primary
> lobbyist for the Friends Committee on National
> Legislation (FCNL). On Sunday July 22 at 12:30pm,
> at the Urbana-Champaign Friends Meetinghouse, 1904
> E. Main St., Urbana, Ned will discuss his work for
> FCNL on his current interests – environment,
> climate change, and energy legislation. Ned can
> also answer questions about other aspects of FCNL
> work.
>
> FCNL is the oldest registered ecumenical lobby in
> Washington, DC. The organization's legislative
> priorities and policies are set by a General
> Committee made up of some 220 Quakers from around
> the country. FCNL's multi-issue advocacy connects
> historic Quaker testimonies on peace, equality,
> simplicity, and truth with peace and social justice
> issues which the United States government is or
> should be addressing. In the last six decades, FCNL
> has played a pivotal role in the creation of the
> Peace Corps, was instrumental in lobbying for the
> creation of the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency,
> played an important role in lobbying for the Civil
> Rights Act, and led efforts in Washington to oppose
> both the first (1991) and second (2003) Iraq wars.
> FCNL's recent accomplishments include encouraging
> Congress to challenge the direction of U.S. policy
> in Iraq; lobbying to protect civilians in Darfur,
> Sudan; leading the effort to block the development
> of a new generation of new nuclear weapons; and
> working to reduce U.S. dependence on oil that is
> critical cause of violent conflict in the world
> today. FCNL is a 501(c)4 public interest lobby. It
> is neither a political action committee (PAC) nor a
> special interest lobby. For more information see
