I don’t want to get technical or seem obtuse, but what is the difference between patriotism and nationalism? And is either one desirable? To me, both seem to be means of classifying individuals for different treatment – something that I do, but don’t feel particularly good about.

In any case, I tend to take Martin’s viewpoint.

Martin, Patriotism is not necessarily the same thing as nationalism. However I do agree, both can be blind, and blind patriotism is as bad as blind nationalism, so I'll assume that by patriotism you meant what I call blind patriotism.

This is a time for anti-war groups to work together. I agree with Bob Naiman's comment: "I would ask Mr. Smith to desist from this campaign [of criticizing the College Democrats' choice of a symbol], and focus his [Mr. Smith's] efforts on working constructively with other organizations to end the
war, rather than attacking organizations which have a long track record of advocating for peace and justice in this community."

The flags are just colored cloth on little pieces of wood. They neither make my heart beat faster out of pride nor disgust. They are just colored cloth on little pieces of wood. Let it go.
