"Does God Really Need Violence?"

Mennonite Theologian J. Denny Weaver will be giving a series of talks
challenging the violence in traditional Christian interpretations of
salvation. Instead of focusing on the necessity of Jesus' violent death, he
will focus on Jesus' life as God's affirmation of nonviolence, laying out a
theological framework for pacifism.

He will be speaking at 1st Mennonite Church (902 W. Springfield, Urbana) the
following times:

Friday Oct 12 7:00 pm - Is Violence Required for the Salvation of Humanity?
Divine violence is at the heart of traditional atonement theory, and leads
to unintended side-effects, such as the common Christian tolerance for
violence. Weaver will challenge the violence inherent in traditional
atonement theories.

Saturday Oct 13th 9:00 am - The Nonviolence of Jesus.
Weaver will present an alternative vision of Jesus' resurrection, not as a
blood sacrifice to satisfy God's judgment against us, but as an affirmation
of Jesus' life and teachings.

Saturday Oct 13th 11:00 am - A Nonviolent Reading of The Book of Revelation.
Is Jesus coming back to destroy his enemies, as the popular Left Behind
series would have us believe? What if the real revelation is a vision of
nonviolence?
