--- Fuller Information ------
The Arab Student Association will be hosting the 3rd annual Palestine Awareness Week. The goal of this event is to inform the campus and local communities of issues pertaining to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. There is a certain urgency in addressing these issues given the increased suffering of Palestinians under the current occupation, and the distorted images portrayed by the media of the reality of the situation in this part of the world.

This year the event is even more special as we are commemorating the 60th anniversary of the "Nakba", an Arabic word for catastrophe, which is what the events of 1948 are popularly called in the Arab World. We are planning to shed light specifically on these events and their impact on Palestinian reality up till this day. It is important to note that not only was the destiny of the Palestinian people completely changed during this year, but also the destiny of many surrounding Arab countries. It is considered to be the origin of many of the problems faced today.

Palestine Awareness Week will take place from April 14-17. It will include different types of events, a brief description is provided below:

1)	"Al Nakba: The Palestinian Catastrophe 1948"
Monday, April 14th at 7:00 pm
103 Mumford Hall
AL NAKBA is a documentary that tackles the tragic events surrounding the creation of the Palestinian refugee problem and examines how and why 750,000 Palestinian Arabs became refugees by the end of the first Arab-Israeli war of 1948. Mr. David Green, academic professional in the Institute for Government and Public Affairs at the University of Illinois and a member of Jewish Voice for Peace, will be there to introduce the film and answer questions following the screening.

2)	"An Occupation, A Reality: Personal Experiences from Palestine": Tuesday, April 15th at 7:00 pm
103 Mumford Hall
Panel: Professor Stephen Gasteyer, Nagham Awadallah, Dana Al-Qadi
Many times when learning about this Palestinian-Israeli conflict we are bombarded with facts, dates, and names we can't pronounce. Here is a chance to hear real live stories from a professor and students here at UIUC who have visited or lived in Palestine.

3)	Dabke Peformance and Workshop + Palestinian Crafts Exhibit: Wednesday, April 16th at 7:00 pm
134 Temple Hoyne Buell Hall
Dabke is a traditional folk step dance that is very popular in the Arab World, more so in some countries than others. It can be danced by men, women, or both, with different steps and different rhythms. Nagham Awadallah is a former member of the famous El Funoun Palestinian Dabke Dance Troupe. There will be a performance by a group of students lead by Nagham, followed by Dabke lessons for beginners. Afterwards there will be an exhibit of Palestinian crafts. Arabic desserts and tea will be served.

4)	"60 years of Occupation, Where Do We Stand Now?": Lecture by ISU Professor Issam Nassar: Thursday, April 17th at 7:00 pm
23 Psychology Building
The state of Israel was created in 1948 when more than 60% of the Palestinian population was displaced. Today, one in every three refugees in the world is a Palestinian. What are we doing to solve this problem? Where is the solution to this conflict?
