Friends and Colleagues:

This is notice of an upcoming two part series in a downstate Illinois
newspaper that might interest you.

There is also an an opportunity to weigh in on a public debate about
Illinois' own "Guantanamo Prison," Tamms Supernax if you are so inclined.

After more than a year of painstaking research by George Pawlaczyk, a dogged
reporter of the old school, and by his colleagues at their downstate
newspaper, the Belleville Democrat is publishing a two day series about
Tamms Prison starting Sunday.

The paper's editor has announced the series and, already, is under fire from
rabid proponents of punishment at any price.

I urge you to go to the newspaper's web site, register to enter comments,
and then read the articles and respond as you think appropriate.

It's possible this report will merit wider attention; if you agree perhaps
you can circulate it beyond southern Illinois.

And if the article is deserving, perhaps your interest will help bring the
paper and its reporters the recognition they will deserve.

The reason your engagement is important is that Illinois' governor and
Michael Randle, the new Director of the Department of Corrections, have
expressed openness to change at Tamms. Julie Hamos, a state representative
who has just announced a run for Congress in Illinois' 10th District, is a
champion of reform at Tamms. Expressions of support for the newspaper, the
administration as it contemplates change, and for Julia Hamos (and her
colleague in the state house Eddie Washington, with whom I visited Tamms
while at the John Howard Association) can make a difference.

And also, Illinois politicians pay attention to down state newspaper
stories and to those comments and letters to the editors which follow
controversial stories.

So, please, consider paying more than passing attention to this article and
respond as you find appropriate.

Our two-day series about the treatment of inmates at the Tamms Correctional
Center, which begins Sunday, was born out of a phone call from a Belleville
woman to reporter George Pawlaczyk last year.

Please forgive cross-posts.

Best,

Malcolm
