"AWARE on the Air," seen tonight at 10pm on cable channel 6 (and soon online at
<www.anti-war.net>), tries to connect the war and the economy -- no easy task,
when all the efforts of the government and the media are being devoted to the
lies that (a) the war is over, (b) the economy is being restructured in the
interest of the people, and not just the wealthy few.
--Karen Medina describes upcoming events, locally and nationally, in
opposition to the war, notably the March on the Pentagon scheduled for March 21,
the weekend of the sixth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq;
--Conrad Wetzel introduces the work of Phil Wilayto, author of "In Defense of
Iran: Notes from a U.S. Peace Delegation's Journey through the Islamic Republic"
(see <http://www.defendersfje.org/dpi>), who will speak at the First Mennonite
Church of Champaign-Urbana (902 West Springfield Avenue Urbana) on Tuesday 17
March at 7pm;
--Ron Szoke considers the 'moderation' of David Brooks' column in this
morning's NY Times, under the title, 'Crash and Burn' (a metaphor for both the
economy and the war);
--Linda Weber arrive in time to offer an earnest of what is to come in next
weeks' discussion of the economy and the war; and
--yr. obdt. servt. (a devotee of Mad Men) meditates on Thomas Pynchon's
proverb, "If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don't have to
worry about answers."
--CGE
[The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the
spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that
spectrum -- even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives
people the sense that there's free thinking going on, while all the time the
presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the
range of the debate. --Noam Chomsky]
