Members & friends of AWARE:
I'm sending his note to a number of people in Champaign-Urbana who I think might
be interested in occasionally taking a role in my Urbana Public Television
program, "News from Neptune: The TV Edition" (Fridays at 7pm on cable channel 6).
The TV show is an outgrowth of the WEFT radio program that Paul Mueth and I
established almost twenty years ago. The new medium retains the same message --
a consideration of the news of the week and its coverage by the media -- in the
spirit of Noam Chomsky, in whose honor the program is named. Chomsky once
observed that, in the U.S. media, “Either you repeat the same conventional
doctrines everybody is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound
like it’s from Neptune.”
We try to say some true things in a weekly hour-long show according to the
following format: in the first half, three people take up to ten minutes each to
make an uninterrupted statement on the issues of the week as they see them; in
the second half, each takes up to ten minutes to ask questions of one or both of
the others. We record the show late on Friday afternoon -- without rehearsal
-- for cablecast that evening, followed by posting online at
<www.newsfromneptune.com>.
The participants vary from week to week and are principally urged as Hotspur
says to "tell the truth and shame the devil." If you would be intersted in
participating, please send me a note at <carl at newsfromneptune.com>.
Best regards, Carl
