AWARE ON THE AIR tonight at 10pm on Urbana Public Television (cable channel 6)
will consider "Iran: A Phony Crisis."

Dahr Jamail, Flynt Leverett and Hillary Mann Leverett, and Alexander Cockburn
will be entertained by Linda Weber, Ron Szoke, and yr. obdt. servt. (and
conversely).

EACH TUESDAY EVENING members and friends of the Anti-War Anti-Racism Effort of
Champaign-Urbana bring you an account of the US government's invasion &
occupation of the Middle East, from Palestine to Pakistan -- and of the
opposition to it, both locally and nationally, from American citizens like us
who are appalled at the government's betrayal of our democratic principles.

TODAY IS SEPTEMBER 29 -- Michaelmas, the feast of Saint Michael the Archangel in
the Western Christian church. (The Archangel Michael is one of the principal
angelic warriors, seen as a protector against the dark of night, and the
administrator of cosmic intelligence.) Michaelmas also marks time and seasons
for secular purposes, notably in universities and courts, particularly in the
United Kingdom and Ireland. The traditional printer's fete, the wayzgoose, was
celebrated on or around Michaelmas, as a celebration of the changing seasons and
the beginning of work by candlelight. The master printer would provide a feast
for his journeymen and apprentices -- traditionally a goose was cooked...

THIS DAY IS REPLETE with instructive military history. On this day in
--480 BCE, at the Battle of Salamis, the Greek fleet under Themistocles
defeats the fleet of Xerxes I of Persia (Iran), providing a model for Western
imperialism;
--1789 the first U.S. Congress adjourns, and in celebration, the US War
Department first establishes a regular army with a strength of several hundred
men; and
--1991, the USG stages a coup against the elected government of Haiti,
continuing the US torture of that country that dates back over two centuries.

ANTI-WAR ANTI-RACISM CALENDAR, October 2009. Upcoming events on the local scene
are taken from last Sunday's AWARE meeting (with thanks to Karen Medina for the
minutes):

*NOW UNTIL NEXT SUMMER -- "Peaceable Assembly Campaign." The organization
Voices for Creative Nonviolence is initiating a nationwide campaign to seek an
end to the U.S. wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan and an end to U.S.
support of the continued occupation of the Palestinian territories. Beginning in
September, 2009, and continuing for the next ten months, we will engage in both
legal and extralegal (nonviolent civil disobedience/civil resistance) lobbying
efforts, urging Representatives and Senators to stop authorizing and funding
wars and occupations. For more information and resources see
<www.peaceableassemblycampaign.org>, email <pac at vcnv.org>, or call 773-878-3815.

University Ave. and Vine/Cunningham to a rally at the Champaign County
Courthouse in Urbana. (This will constitute AWARE's regular monthly peace
demonstration.) This year's Unity March theme focuses on the lack of adequate
housing, healthcare, and food for the growing number of needy in Champaign
County. You are asked to bring donations of blankets, bedding, nonperishable
foods to benefit the Safe Haven homeless community.

*Oct 4 (Sunday) 5:30pm "People's Potluck" (earlier time, different location) at
the University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright St. Anne Feeney is performing in solidarity
with the GEO, 7PM, in Gregory Hall across the street from the potluck. The
concert is free.

*Oct 9-11 "Midwest Liberty Festival" at the Du Quoin fairgrounds in southern
Illinois. "A non-partisan, non-factional event for liberty lovers and those who
respect our Constitution and the Bill of Rights"; it should contain a
substantial anti-war element. See <info at midwestlibertyfest.com> and
<http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=119830955184>.

*Oct 10 (Saturday) 3pm-7pm "The Really Really Free Market" and "Food Not Bombs"
at Westside Park in Champaign. "The Really Really Free Market is a festival
where no money is exchanged, no bartering or trading takes place. Everything is
free. The community is invited to bring under-used items (like that skateboard
in your attic or sewing kit you never use) and skills and services (think: free
back-rubs and bike tune-ups) and give them away. Food Not Bombs will be serving
free food. Everyone is welcome to a party where there's no distinction between
those that have and those in need. And of course, the event is really, really
free. We can always use volunteers for FNB, collecting food, helping prepare
it. We need people to participate to make these events successful and
consistent. For more information contact <foodnotbombs.cu at gmail.com>."
