All due respect to Wikipedia, but I've hosted White Elephant grab bag parties for decades, and the idea isn't to bring something worthless!! The idea is to bring something you don't want or need that would very much appeal to others. Examples: - CD or DVD that's a duplicate or just not yr taste - a Tee that is too small/too large for yr own use (or the message just isn't "you") - bottle of wine (not yr taste, or you've given it up for lent) - bag of coffee/box of tea bags (you don't do caffeine anymore) - jewelry (you decided not to pierce yr ears after all) - sweets and treats (see wine, above)In other words, bring something you'd donate (w/ everyone watching you do it) to the Sal Army or a friend's garage sale or silent auction. Always a fun time, showing that one person's trash is another's treasure. --Jenifer

On Dec. 26th, the AWARE meeting will be chez Estabrook, Five
Litchfield Lane in Champaign (the last house on the left [sic] in a
cul-de-sac opposite Bottenfield School).

AWARE meeting
Sunday, December 26, 2010
5pm
5 Litchfield Lane, Champaign, Illinois (more on the location below)
Bring a white elephant gift if you would like to play the game. The
"gift" should be of a value of as close to zero as you can get. If you
have something around the house you want to get rid of, this is
perfect. A slightly different take -- look for or create for something
peace related. See more of the explanation below.

More on the location:
* Litchfield Ln is east off S. Prospect Avenue, Champaign, Illinois;
south of Kirby Avenue, yet north of Windsor Rd., and north of
Devonshire Dr.
* Google map: http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&q=5+litchfield+lane+champaign&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=5+Litchfield+Ln,+Champaign,+Illinois+61820&gl=us&ll=40.092633,-88.255363&spn=0.007945,0.010557&t=h&z=16

More on white elephant gift exchange:
* If we have six people or more, I propose that we play "white
elephant gift exchange" -- The goal of a white elephant party is to
entertain -- not to gain. Each participant is asked to bring a gift
worth no more than a pre-agreed upon amount. Nothing is a good amount.
The term white elephant refers to a gift whose maintenance costs
exceed its usefulness.
* Gifts are typically inexpensive, humorous items or used items from home.
1) Participants draw numbers from a hat to determine the order for
taking turns.
2) The players take turn in the corresponding succession.
3) Each person takes his or her turn choosing a gift. The first
participant unwraps a gift from the pile and then shows it to
everyone. The next player can either "steal" an already opened gift or
be adventurous and go for a wrapped gift from the pile. If the
participant chooses to steal an unwrapped gift, the person whose gift
was stolen now repeats their turn and either steals another person's
gift (they cannot immediately steal back the gift that was just
stolen) or unwraps a new gift. This cycle of stealing can sometimes
continue for a long time until a new gift is chosen at which point the
turn is passed to the next participant.
