How did the US get from Plessy v. Ferguson to Brown v. Boar of Education?

Did the SC justices suddenly strike their collective forehead, go "D'oh!," and 
exclaim "We've been misinterpreting the obvious sense of the law! Now we 
suddenly see it right..."?
