In Chicago this week, you could be meeting people like:

Tariq Ali is a writer and filmmaker. He has written more than two
dozen books on world history and politics, and seven novels
(translated into over a dozen languages) as well as scripts for the
stage and screen. He is an editor of New Left Review and lives in
London. See his web site at TariqAli.org.

Kevin Ovenden is an organizer of the Viva Palestina solidarity group
and veteran of two convoys to Gaza. He was on the main ship of the
Gaza freedom flotilla that was attacked in international waters by
Israeli Commandos on May 31, in which at least 9 people were killed.

Anthony Arnove is the author of Iraq: The Logic of Withdrawal and
co-editor with Howard Zinn of Voices of a People's History of the
United States, a companion volume to Zinn's classic book.

Marvin Reeves is free today after 21 years spent in Illinois prisons
for a crime he had nothing to do with. Reeves was a co-defendant of
Ronnie Kitchen and was tortured by Chicago police under the command of
Jon Burge. Prosecutors relied on a coerced “confession” from Kitchen
and faked testimony from a jailhouse snitch to convict the two
men—Ronnie was sentenced to death and Marvin to life without parole.
In July 2009, prosecutors were forced to admit the truth, and Marvin
and Ronnie were freed.

Chris Hedges is a weekly columnist on Truthdig, and a senior fellow at
The Nation Institute. He spent nearly two decades as a foreign
correspondent in Central America, the Middle East, Africa and the
Balkans. He worked for The Christian Science Monitor, National Public
Radio, The Dallas Morning News and The New York Times, for which he
was a foreign correspondent for 15 years.
