Confronting Racism: From the Sports Arena to the Political Arena
A Public Forum
Tuesday, September 28, 5:30 PM
Greg Hall R. 319 (on Wright Street, northwest corner of the main quad)

From the protests against the mis-named "Ground Zero mosque" to Glenn Beck's
desecration of Martin Luther King's dream, to the passage of a draconian
immigration law, SB 1070 in Arizona, it feels as though racists have been able
to dominate the mainstream political debate lately. But their racism is
producing something else--resistance. That resistance has included
counter-protests of thousands against the anti-Muslim bigots from New York City
to Gainesville, Florida, and it has fueled a movement for immigrants' rights
that stopped the worst aspects of SB 1070 dead in their tracks. That resistance
has even reached Major League Baseball, where immigrants rights activists have
launched a campaign to get next year's Major League Baseball game moved from
Arizona because of that state's anti-immigrant stance. And here at the
University of Illinois, protests against Chief Illiniwek, the racist mascot,
have drawn hundreds in the past, and stand to do the same this year.

Join socialists, immigrants' rights and other activists as we discuss the fight
against racism, from Assembly Hall to Ground Zero.
