This is an amazing topic ... and the discussions at ISO events is
almost guaranteed to be amazing.

PUBLIC FORUM--The 1930s: From Unemployed Councils to Sit-Down Strikes
Mon. June 20, 6 PM
University of Illinois
Graduate School of Library and Information Science, R. 131
501 E. Daniel (between 5th and 6th St., enter from the east entrance,
by the parking lot)
A decade that began in the throes of the Great Depression led to the
greatest upsurge of the labor movement in U.S. history, the formation
of mass industrial unions, and the birth of the Congress of Industrial
Organizations (CIO). Between 1936 and 1937 alone, more than two
million workers had been on strike. Today, working people face
continual attacks on their unions and unemployment rates hover around
ten percent. As U.S. labor awakens from its decades-long slumber with
a prolonged fight against budget cuts and the erosion of collective
bargaining rights in Wisconsin and other states, what can we learn
from the struggles of the 1930s? Come hear Leighton Christiansen, an
activist with the Graduate Employees Organization (GEO), unearth our
hidden history of radicalism, and discuss what it means for those
fighting for a better world today.

Leighton first presented on this topic last summer at the Socialism
2010 in Chicago. He will also be speaking at the Socialism 2011
conference, along with dozens of other speakers on current events,
radical history and political theory who will be discussing and
debating the ideas we need right now to change the world. To register
for the Socialism 2011 conference, visit www.socialismconference.org,

SOCIALISM 2011: REVOLUTION IN THE AIR
Revolutionary politics, debate and entertainment
JULY 1-4 | CHICAGO
http://www.socialismconference.org

Everywhere we look in the world there are revolutions and struggles
that are challenging dictatorship, economic inequality, and
oppression.

>From Cairo to Madison, these struggles show us that "another world is
possible." But they also raise questions about what ideas, strategies,
and tactics are necessary to carry the struggle forward.
Socialism 2011 will provide an opportunity for new and veteran
activists to discuss what these events mean for our world, and for our
own movements today.

Last year, more than 1,500 people turned out to Socialism 2010 in
Oakland and Chicago.

Don’t miss the chance to meet with hundreds of others like you who
want to build an alternative to a system of greed, racism, war and
oppression.

What they say about past Socialism Conferences...

The young people at the conference took me back in time to when you
were ready to stand for what was right. It lets you know that what you
may have planted years ago will come to reality today. I feel great to
have become a part of it.
—Dr. John Carlos, 1968 Olympic bronze medalist who raised the Black
Power salute.

Socialism conferences are exciting gathering places for students and
young activists, for revolutionary scholars and fighters for social
justice, to share ideas and experiences that can help us understand
and change the world. I've been to a couple—it's not enough. I'm
coming again.
—Paul LeBlanc, socialist and author
