On Tuesday, September 20, starting at 5pm, Champaign-Urbana residents will
gather at the Champaign County Veterans Memorial, Broadway and Main, Urbana,
to protest recent threats by U.S. government officials against the
Palestinian quest for self-determination, including the U.S. threat to veto
the Palestinian application for U.N. membership and threats by some in
Congress to cut off aid to the Palestinians as punishment for taking their
case to the U.N. General Assembly.

"Whatever one thinks of the Palestinian bid for U.N. membership at this
time, fair-minded people should agree that the Palestinians have the right
to present their case to the United Nations," said Robert Naiman, Urbana
resident and Policy Director of Just Foreign Policy, one of the organizers
of the event. "It's wrong to threaten to punish the Palestinians for making
their case, and if the U.S. vetoes Palestinian freedom now, American claims
to support the Arab Spring will be discredited in the Arab world."

In an article Saturday which cited University of Illinois Law Professor
Francis Boyle, the Wall Street Journal noted, "If the Palestinian Authority
succeeds in winning even an incremental upgrade of its status at the UN, it
could subject Israel's military to international courts for actions in
Palestinian territory -- as well as allow Palestinian control of its
Israeli-patrolled air space and national waters off Gaza."
