"The People Speak: A Live Performance"

Books, and the radical voices in them, are weapons in the class struggle.

This year marks the second anniversary of the passing of the people's
historian, Howard Zinn, author of "A People's History of the United
States," one of the most-read radical history books published in the
U.S.

This year also marks the 10th Anniversary of the founding of Haymarket
Books ( http://www.haymarketbooks.org/ ). Haymarket Books is one of
the most important non-profit radical and revolutionary book
publishers in the United States today. Haymarket has recently
published books by Tom Engelhardt, Omar Barghouti, Silvia Giagnoni,
Aviva Chomsky, Noam Chomsky, Amy Goodman, Ian Angus and Simon Butler,
Christine Shearer, Oliver Stone and Tariq Ali, Tom Wicker, John Carlos
and Dave Zirin, & The Young Lords, Iris Morales and Michael Abramson,
just to name a few.

As a non-profit publisher Haymarket Books continues to operate on a
modest budget. Building a new culture of democracy takes energy and
commitment. It also takes resources. Haymarket publishes
books that the big corporate publishing houses won’t touch. To find
the readership that Haymarket books deserve, they rely on the
solidarity and generosity of readers who share their values and
their mission.Every step of the last ten years of Haymarket publishing
has been made possible by the generous, consistent support of allies
who believe in the need for books that can change the world.

On Friday evening January 27 the Urbana-Champaign Branch of the
International Socialist Organization will be sponsoring "The People
Speak: A Live Performance," in support of Haymarket Books. All
proceeds will go to help Haymarket Books continue to their important
work.

We have chosen the date and event to honor the work of Howard Zinn,
and to mark the second anniversary of his passing. Making this event
successful takes the efforts of many folks in the Urbana-Champaign
area. As we did last year, we are looking for local activists to speak
and/or perform the words and/or songs of some of the many radicals we
all read about it Howard Zinn's "A People's History."

At the 2011 "The People Speak: A Live Performance" event, speakers and
performers chose to read excerpts from Zinn's "A People's History" or
from Zinn and Anthoy Arnoves' work "Voices from A People's History of
the United States," the book that gathered the full length primary
source speeches and documents that are quoted or excerpted in "A
People's History."

To honor the year of revolt that we saw in 2011, for the 2012 "The
People Speak: A Live Performance" event, we are opening up the field,
and asking performers to also consider inspirational words or songs
from the Arab Spring, the Madison occupation, the fight to save Troy
Davis, the Occupy Movement, the revolt in Greece, etc.

Just as Haymarket Books is working to rebuild, strengthen, and give
voice to the Left in the United States, the U-C ISO hopes that you
will join us at this fabulous event, and help create stronger ties
among local activists. If you or a member of your organization would
like to perform, please contact us.
Endorsements and co-sponsorships are welcome. Tabling space is also available.
