Title: The Fight Against Mass Incarceration in Illinois

Barbara Kessel was a Distinguished Professor of Chicago City Colleges
- Truman college, City-Wide College, and Malcolm X College. She taught
English, composition, ESL and Public Speaking. In 2004, she retired
and moved to Champaign-Urbana, becoming involved with Books to
Prisoners, the Friends Meeting, and CU Citizens for Peace and Justice.
She founded Community Courtwatch and the Three R's (Reading Reduces
Recidivism) that serves state prison libraries. In 2010 she received
the ACLU Chalmers award for extraordinary service in the cause of
Civil Rights and Civil Liberties. She also received the 2010 McKinley
Foundation Social Justice Award. in the community individual category.
