CAROL AMMONS FOR STATE REPRESENTATIVE –Proven Fighter for the People

Dear Family and Friends,

We write to ask for your support to Elect Carol Ammons as the
Democratic Primary
candidate for State Representative from the 103rd district. Carol has a
proven record as the candidate who will fight for the people. Carol is
running on her record of five years of service in local government and
decades of community service.

We have chosen to support Carol Ammons because she has devoted her life to
the quest for social change and justice for all, not prestige or power for
herself.

Carol is a Proven Fighter for savings $$ and reducing tax burden for all
citizens

Over the past 5 years on the County Board and now on the Urbana City
Council, Carol has taken a leadership role on many issues. Her advocacy
led to the County Board’s selection of the only jail consultant who would
examine ways to reform the local criminal justice system to reduce the jail
population rather than merely building a new facility with more beds.

Carol Ammons is a strong supporter of the Fair Tax Amendment to establish a
graduated income tax for Illinois that would enable the state to raise more
revenue without increasing the tax burden on middle and low income families.

Carol is a Proven Fighter for Quality of Life and Social Justice Issues

Carol’s work has included protecting the Mahomet aquifer; establishing wind
farms in the county, reforming the criminal justice system, improving the
quality of rental housing and helping homeowners afford sewer repairs.
Carol has both the experience and the creativity to seek solutions other
than the status quo.

For decades, Carol has been involved in many social service agencies as
both volunteer and staff including her employment at Catholic Charities and
the Boys’ and Girls’ Club. She has run soup kitchens and organized drives
to collect school supplies for low income children.

Carol is a Proven Fighter for the People

As our representative in Springfield, Carol will fight to protect public
employees’ pensions and to secure more funding for K-12 public schools and
for the University of Illinois. She supports same-sex marriage. Her vocal
opposition to the county clerk charging a higher fee for civil union
registration than for marriage licenses stopped that proposal from being
enacted.

In Springfield Carol will fight for reproductive choice for all women and
girls, immigration reform that protects families and to put an end to the
unsuccessful war on drugs that has led to mass incarcerations and a prison
system that is starving our education system.

Carol Ammons’ Priority Concerns

Education: To expand education as a vehicle for social mobility

• Reform education funding we need more funding for public education and
the progressive income tax will make more money available for education

• More funding for K-12 education

• Expand access to higher education, increase resources for University of
Illinois

• Reduce cost of student loans

Human Rights/Social Justice Issues: To fight for fairness, equality,
diversity, and justice

• Protection of civil rights & civil liberties

• Reproductive choice

• Immigration reform

• Equal marriage rights for same sex couples

• Effective alternatives to mass incarceration with emphasis on non-
violent offenders; the cost of the prison system is starving the needs of
our public schools

Economic Reform: improving the economy & social contract

• Prioritize job creation we need to do more than bringing in low-wage jobs

• Living wage jobs – we are looking for ways to partner with private
industry to bring about living wage jobs

• Secure public employees’ pensions – state government failed to pay their
share, Oppose reducing the amount of public employees pensions; they’ve
already paid their fair share: we have to think about pensions for the
future, younger workers are going to have a new pension system. But we
should not take away from those who have already earned their pension, and
invested their time in the workforce. The legislature must ensure that the
state doesn’t default.

• Progressive income tax – graduated income tax: the majority of states
that have income tax are all graduated now, and Illinois should do that
also. The answer to economic problems should not be on the backs of
children and poor people, people with disabilities, and senior citizen.

• Affordable housing, especially for working poor with incomes below
poverty level
