• 1904 – Anton Chekhov's 'The Cherry Orchard' receives its premiere performance at the Moscow Art Theatre;
• 1961 – U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivers a televised farewell address in which he warns against the "military-industrial complex"; and
~ on the same day, Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba, the first democratically elected Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo after he helped win its independence from Belgium in June 1960, is murdered - on Eisenhower's orders.
