Feb. 2 is the 20th Anniversary of Hugo Chavez's inauguration after his stunning and decisive 1998 electoral victory. We will have a special remembrance of Comandante Chavez at the meeting.

A right-wing coup attempt against the democratically elected president Nicolás Maduro is underway in Venezuela, orchestrated by the Trump White House and the CIA along with its junior partners — the so-called Lima Group. We are witnessing once again a classic example of U.S. imperialism and its proxies attempting to carry out an illegal regime change operation against a progressive government. People all over the world need to stand in solidarity with Venezuela in this critical moment.

The U.S. sanctions on Venezuelan oil are criminal and a cruel attack on the population of Venezuela. Sanctions on Iraq's economy by the United States and the United Nation led to 750,000 unnecessary deaths -- half of whom were children. The sanctions were also precursor to a war that led to the destruction of Iraq, the deaths of millions of civilians and the rises of ISIS.

No good can come from U.S. regime change efforts.

Nicolás Maduro is the democratically elected president of Venezuela. He was elected with over 67% of the vote in elections that were held in May at the request of the opposition so that peace talks between the government and the opposition could continue. It was the opposition that broke off the talks with the government.

Venezuela's elections (which Jimmy Carter called the best in the world) and constitution are infinitely more democratic than the United States. Venezuela is the only country in the world to hold a public audit of the vote on election night.
