My favorite <br>theologian, the late Oxford philosopher Herbert McCabe, used to say that <br>holiness was not first of all about goodness, but about truth: if we can tell <br>the truth about ourselves and our world, then goodness can take care of itself.<br><br>That seems to me right. The best will in the world can do the right thing only <br>by accident, in the absence of an accurate analysis of the situation.<br><br>Our program has always been a spontaneous & unrehearsed discussion of the news <br>of the week & its coverage by the media - in search of an accurate analysis.<br><br>But the task is not straightforward: Alexander Cockburn, proprietor of the best <br>political newsletter on the web, <a href="CounterPunch.org">CounterPunch.org</a>, recently remarked - correctly <br>it seems to me - "By and large, down the decades, the mainstream newspapers have <br>— often rabidly — obstructed and sabotaged efforts to improve our social and <br>political condition."<br><br>Our program's name, “News from Neptune,” honors Noam Chomsky, who to my mind has <br>been talking sense about American politics for years. Chomsky has said that -- <br>in the US media -- “either you repeat the same conventional doctrines everybody <br>is saying, or else you say something true, and it will sound like it’s from <br>Neptune.”<br><br>My discussants on the program for the third week of January, 2010, are Wayne <br>Johnson and Ron Szoke. Our format is to take up to 10 minutes each to talk about <br>events of the week, and then take turns to ask one another questions about <br>what's been said.<br><br>This edition was cablecast on January 22nd. On that day in 1521, Emperor Charles <br>V, opened the Diet of Worms - in fact a meeting of the parliament, congress or <br>Reichstag of the European Union in a small town on Rhine, but a favorite event <br>for word-play by students of early modern history. Even Shakespeare, who dearly <br>loved a pun, couldn't resist: he has Hamlet say, when asked where is the body of <br>the man he's just killed, that he's at supper:<br><br> "At supper? Where?"<br> "Not where he eats, but where he is eaten.
