The group that met tonight for the Microtonal Design UnConference Meet and Greet
has an interest in singing together in a tuning called 88-cent equal
temperament, towards generating pieces and performing them this week. None of
us have tried this yet. You can join us!
We're meeting from 1:00 to 2:30 tomorrow (Wednesday 4/20) at the Family Room of
the IMC, then from 10 am to noon the next day (Thursday 4/21) at "the Mansion"
(606 Ohio St, Urbana). We're likely to meet again after that and perform on
Thursday night for the Performatorium (7:30 to 9:30) and/or the Oddmusic
Instrument Expo (Saturday 4/23, 2 to 5). I mention all that to give you a good
idea of the commitment involved, if you don't already know. We're in the throes
of an UnConference, after all!
If you'd like to join us and you weren't in the group that met tonight (it's
entry level -- like I said, none of us have done this before) then please email
me. We'd love to have you!
Much love,
Andrew

88-cent equal temperament (or 88cET) is a tuning system derived by stacking an
interval of 88 cents (that's exactly 88% of a 12-equal half step). The tuning
thus generated contains no octaves! The octave is 1200 cents. See how 88cET
misses the octave:

This is only one of the intriguing things about this tuning. Come tomorrow to
find out more!
