1.  This is your opportunity to help the community and have fun at the same 
time!  Volunteers are needed to work inside Tent City during the IHSA State 
Football Championships on Nov. 28-29 to pass out complimentary souvenirs, make 
sure the coachesroom is stocked with food and drinks, monitor the interactive 
games, answer questions about the community from the fans, and pick up trash 
as necessary.  Shifts are 9-12pm, 12-3pm, 3-6pm, and 6-9pm on each day.

2.  Alternative Spring Break is looking for participants for each of 18 spring
break volunteer trips this March. Topics range from Environmentalism to
Urban Poverty to Native American Issues, and much more! Applications are
available at www.uiuc.edu/ro/asb. Due Nov. 7th at the University YMCA.


3.  Bring some cheer into the life of a child.  The Office of Volunteer 
Programs is running the Holiday Toy Drive for local children who may not get 
anything else to brighten their days during these dreary winter months.  You 
will be assigned a specific child and a general description of the kind of toy 
of which they are in need.  All gifts are limited to under $15.  If interested

4.  The First United Methodist Church in downtown Champaign is developing a 
new mentor program for 5th graders.  The Family Ministry Team is starting the 
Youth Leaders Energy Detectives to help youth explore energy use in the 
downtown neighborhood while developing skills in leadership, problem-solving, 
and computer applications.  They are looking for volunteers to help out as a 
mentors one day a week (for about two hours) during an after school program 
beginning this January.  Transportation will be provided.  If interested

5.  Thomasboro School hosts their annual Secret Shoppe Elves.  They are 
looking for volunteers to help students from grades K-8 shop for their 
families and friends.  They also need volunteers to help set-up before the 
store is open, take down after the store closes, decorate, and wrap the 
presents.  If interested, contact Lisa Comstock at 643-3275.


6."El Informador de Champaign-Urbana" is a community based Spanish newspaper 
run by volunteers. The purpose of the paper is to inform the Latino community 
of issues/events that might affect their lives while creating a link with the 
community at large. We are seeking an assistant for the marketing department, 
reporters, distributors, assistant for culture/entertainment section, and 
coordinator for the children's section.  If interested, contact Mirta Leon at 
352-4930.


7.  The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Central Illinois Branch is looking for 
volunteers to distribute display stands with information inserts to local 
businesses for their Team Im Training fundraising event.  Team In Training is 
a comprehensive endurance-training program for runners, walkers, cyclists, and 
triathletes.  The goal of the TNT is to increase funding to support the 
Society's mission while promoting fitness and healthy lifestyles.    
Volunteers will distribute these stands to the businesses around town between 
December 1st and December 21st.  If interested, contact Kristina Oncken at

8.  Enjoy working with kids?  Enjoy working in the water?  The Champaign 
County YMCA is in need of volunteers to help run the Community Splash program 
December 15-18.  Volunteers will be given information and training in basic 
swimming and water safety skills prior to the start of the program.  
Volunteers must be 16 years and older.  Volunteer hours will vary from 
4:00-8:00 PM.  Call Sarah Westhoff at 239-2815 for more information.
