1.  After-school Program for the 'Young Leaders Energy 
Detectives' Program

Want to help out as a one-on-one mentor in a short term After-
school program, once a week?!  We need you! We are seeking 
outgoing and dedicated young adults to serve as  'friends' to 
5th grade students in the 'Young Leaders Energy Detectives' 
Program.  

A little bit about the Program:
* to be held once a week for 12 weeks, Wednesdays, 3:00-5:00 
pm, Sept. 22-early Dec. ( or 6 once-a-weeks, if you can come 
only every other week)
* Led by an Adult Coordinator and you Mentors
* has the goal of leading these youth in exploring energy use 
in the downtown neighborhood, while also developing skills in 
teamwork, problem-solving and computer applications
* will include not only investigation and homework/study 
time, but a gym-time and a snack-time
* sponsored by First United Methodist Church, Champaign
* curriculum donated by Educational Dividends of Champaign

2.  American Heart Association—2004 Champaign County American 
Heart Walk

WHO: Over 1000 walkers from the Champaign County area.

WHAT: 	A non-competitive walk and fund raising event to 
fight heart disease and stroke—our nation's #1 and #3 
killers. 

WHERE: Kesler Hall, Champaign County Fairgrounds and Crystal 
Lake Park, Urbana, IL.

WHEN: 	Saturday, October 9th, 2004. 
		Health Fair:	9:00 am
		Registration:	9:00 am
		Warm up: 	9:45 am
		Step off 		10:00 am   

WHY: 	To help fund life-saving cardiovascular disease and 
stroke research, education and programs.  The mission of the 
American Heart Association is to reduce disability and death 
from cardiovascular disease and stroke.  Heart disease is the 
number one cause of death and claims a life every 33 
seconds.  Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the 
number one disabler.  We save lives with every dollar 
raised.

3.  29th Annual Sweetcorn Festival

Please consider participating in the 29th Annual Sweetcorn 
Festival to be held Friday, August 27th and Saturday, August 
28th in downtown Urbana.

Voted “Best Festival in C-U” 2002

Festivities for Urbana’s popular Sweetcorn Festival begin 
Friday, August 27, from 5 to 11 p.m. with a kick-off party. 
The festival continues on Saturday, August 28, from 11 a.m. 
to 11 p.m. in downtown Urbana. 

In addition to the delicious, hot, steaming ears of 
sweetcorn, the 29th Annual Sweetcorn Festival will have live 
music, kids area and activities, a dog show, the 8th Annual 
Urbana Motor Muster, the 2nd Annual Arts Boulevard, food, 
beer and beverage vendors, as well as craft and informational 
booths! More details to follow!

4.      Crisis Nursery offers something easy and fun! 

We need volunteers who are willing to get wet, have a good 
time and be able to sit on a platform within the tank for 30 
minutes.  In return for your support, you will receive a 
Crisis Nursery t-shirt.

5. Single Parent Scholarship Foundation (SPSF)

The Single Parent Scholarship Foundation (SPSF) is a non-
profit organization that provides scholarships and supportive 
services to single parents in college. The scholarships that 
we provide are supported by fundraisers and donations. SPSF 
is in need of volunteers to help with our annual fundraising 
event. This year we are participating in the Bergner’s 
Community Day Event to help raise funds for our scholarships 
fund.

What: Fundraiser
Number of Volunteers needed: No limit
Start date: Now
End date: November 20th.
How: Volunteers will be equipped with all supplies (Bergner’s 
coupon booklets) that have a face value of $5.00. SPSF 
brochures will be provided as well to give out to individuals 
who wish to purchase a coupon booklet.

6. HOMEWORKS volunteers needed

HOMEWORKS is a home improvement resale warehouse selling new 
and gently used furniture, household items, gardening 
supplies, and building materials to the public at greatly 
discounted prices. The 9,000 sq. foot store opened in May 
2003 and is almost completely volunteer run.  Below are 
specific volunteer opportunities that we now have open.

Cashiers needed to help customers and run the cash register 
at HOMEWORKS, Wednesdays 3-7pm, Fridays and Saturdays 9am-
4pm.  Basic math skills, attention to detail, customer 
service skills, and previous cashier experience desired.

Pick-up and delivery drivers needed at HOMEWORKS on 
Wednesdays 3-7pm, Fridays & Saturdays 9am-4pm.  Drive our 
pickup or box truck to help with donation pick-ups and

interested.

7. Crisis Line Volunteer Training

What do Crisis Line volunteers do? 
* Help with various situations, including assistance with 
information, depression, social support, and suicide 
prevention.
* Receive ongoing supervision and consultation from mental 
health professionals.
* Gain training with active listening, risk assessment for 
depression and suicide, relationships, community resources 
and referrals.

Must attend all 4 training sessions and complete 8 hours of 
on-the-job training.

Training Dates and Times: Thursdays, September 16 & 18 from 
6pm to 9pm. Saturdays, September 23 & 25 from 2pm to 6pm.

8. School Supplies Drive

Phi Eta Sigma and the Office of Volunteer Programs will be co-
sponsoring a school supplies drive from August 21- September 
9 to benefit local youth. We are asking for donations of 
pens/pencils, notebooks/folders, glue, crayons/markers, and 
rulers.  The items that are collected will be donated to Salt 
and Light, an area organization that assists families below 
the poverty line. Drop off locations can be found at Walmart 
of Savoy, Osco Drugs on Green St. , and the Office of 
Volunteer Programs located in the RSO complex.

9. Dump and Run setup/sale at Stock Pavilion this week!

MUCH HELP is needed to get ready for the big sale this week 
sponsored by the University YMCA. Below are times we need 
help, all volunteering will take place at the Stock Pavilion 
(1402 W. Pennsylvania Avenue-Across the street (north) from 
cemetery/south of the Quad). If you can help us during any of 
the following times, please just show up at the Stock 
Pavilion:  Monday 9-6pm, Tuesday 9-6pm, Wednesday 9-10pm, 
Thursday 9-7pm, Friday 9-6pm, and/or Saturday 9-6pm.
