Sheer Willpower

This morning as I was huffing through minute twenty on the elliptical
machine at the gym. Steve, looking all heavy eyed came up to my machine.
“How are you?” I asked.

“Tired,” he replied. “I keep waiting for this to be fun. But it hasn’t
happened yet.”

I see Steve there regularly when I too force myself out at the break of
dawn. Funny though that he should pick today to tell me that he is waiting
for this to be fun because the today was the day that I told myself I wasn’t
going to wait for it to be fun anymore. I also wasn’t going to wait to be
inspired. I wasn’t going to wait until I felt better. I wasn’t going to wait
until I had a friend to go with me. I wasn’t going to wait until I had the
perfect book to engage me while I sweated away. I wasn’t going to wait until
my schedule was lighter. I was just going to go. I was going to put on
thirty minutes on the elliptical machine. Period.

Twenty-seven minutes, twenty-eight minutes, twenty-nine minutes and thirty.
I was off of that machine. I did about three minutes of stretching, weighed
myself, put on my coat and I was back at home. Finished.

Sheer willpower. Sometimes you just have to do it.
