CHANGES

A weekly newsletter of motivation and information

For a REASONABLE DIET

(and a reasonable life).

Subscribe or unsubscribe here <http://www.reasonablediet.com/>.

Think of getting to healthy as being "in training" instead of a diet or
exercise plan.

Read this week's article – "Train, Not Strain."

(It is posted below the two OPPORTUNITY announcements)

****************** #1

OPPORTUNITY – (for the first ten people who qualify) FREE DIET COACHING

-- Do you have 20 or more pounds to lose?

-- Have you lost and then gained weight before?

-- Would you say that your main challenge in weight loss is getting and
staying motivated?

-- Do you have a telephone and are you willing to call in once a week for a
group conference and report your weight gain or loss?

-- Are you willing to have your conference recorded? (Using only your first
name.)

The tele-group that I am currently conducting is great! The women are
losing. But I want to start a new one with everyone starting out at the same
time. I'll then make it into a podcast (internet radio show) for others all
across the country to be able to listen to for inspiration, motivation and
tips. Are you brave enough to be one of the "big losers" with me? If so and
if you have a half hour at 7am or noon one day a week – drop me an email and
I'll send you the details.

************* #2

OPPORTUNITY

This must be prime weight loss season. More than 80% of my clients lost
weight when they stepped on the scale last week! If you want to take the
strain off of your knees and joints, lower your blood pressure, feel
comfortable having photos taken, have more energy, and feel like you are
living your life with integrity -- then it is time to start the journey.

Don't make excuses -- especially not the excuse that you've lost weight
before, only to gain it back. There is only one way to get and keep weight
off in the future: that is by starting TODAY. To live in the past is a form
of wheel-spinning that will only serve to keep you stuck.

I have a five week money back guarantee with my groups. What do you have to
lose?

************** "TRAIN, NOT STRAIN"

(c) 2006 Sandra Ahten

Recently I was perusing a website for training people to walk a marathon. I
was musing about the possibility (and the sanity) of undertaking such an
endeavor. On one hand, I have amazed myself with some long distance bike
rides. On the other hand, it would require some serious discipline.

Uh, I don't color in the lines; I can't stand for anyone to tell me what to
do; and I would never, ever be described as disciplined. Never.

But I needed to consider giving myself some incentive to take a few less
winter naps and a few more walks. I've been slipping down a slope of
inactivity that is starting to look a little like hibernation. Check my
pulse.

I did get inspired to go to the gym four times in one week when I got my new
iPod. I was all about that. But lethargy ensued and I settled into drifting
off on the couch as a perfectly fine way to catch up on favorite podcasts.

"Training is about change," says the website. In this case, the change
desired is for the trainees to be able to walk 26.2 miles. I looked further
at the schedule. Three months in advance, one needs to start the training --
from a base of 20 miles per week. Oh, I see. I wouldn't be training. I would
be training to train.

As my first baby step, I committed to unearthing my pedometer. "Good job
Sandra!" my cheerleader voice yelled from the sidelines.

Then I made a commitment to walk 20 miles per week. That seemed possible and
even like a challenging bit of fun. It felt right to me. I have not
committed to the marathon, but I have been out on the path everyday since
setting the 20 miles per week goal. "You go girl!" the cheerleader voice
commended. I really began to feel inspired.

I've being using the inspiration to creatively reframe my thoughts about
food and exercise. I've forsaken my diet and exercise plan for a training
plan.

My cheerleader ran and hid behind the bleachers as my nasty negative voice
came out and loudly admonished, "That's just in your head. You are such a
chump. Your diet and exercise plan is really no different than your training
plan. You'll probably be off of it in a couple of weeks too."

And, in a way, my nasty negative voice is right: It is "just in my head."
But at this stage of improving my routine, I'd estimate that 90 percent of
my problem is "just in my head."

It is true that my enthusiasm may fade in a week or two, but I don't have to
worry about that. I am living in today -- and today, I'm clipping my
pedometer on my waistband and going for a walk.

The negative voice reminds me that I've quit every exercise plan I've ever
started. It speaks the truth. But, over the last six years, I've gone from
panting like a dying dog on the side of the road during a five-mile bicycle
ride to finishing a 580-mile bike trip in one week. "Good for you," the
cheerleader encouraged, "There are worse things than starting and stopping.
At the top of the list is not starting at all."

Should you consider training for a marathon or another athletic event?
Perhaps you want to train to comfortably handle a day at the amusement park
with your grandkids this summer.

Maybe you can think of yourself as being in training for a healthy
reasonable diet; or being in training for a long, hale and hearty life.

"Train, not strain," says the website. You don't have to deprive or hurt
yourself.

Determine your first baby step. What will your small accomplishments be? Do
you need a calendar for your training schedule? You can put happy face
stickers on it every day that you accomplish a goal. (No, I'm not kidding.)

Shhhh. Quiet your negative voice. Line up your cheerleading team – and get
moving.
