David,

Great to have you on board. Here are a couple of pointers and questions
to get started:

* You are right that getting started w/ the Via board will be easiest.
It is essentially a desktop PC motherboard, no? Will you boot from
  CD-ROM or CF card?

To build a CF card for the system, run the buildflash script,
but override the default (Soekris) kernel configuration with -k.
The "GENERIC" kernel configuration will suffice.

(A couple notes: the -k option is new. It is only on the trunk.
The buildflash script is in src/boot-image/.)

  Build the CD-ROM with buildiso.

* What parts compose your WRT? What CPU, radio, etc? If it is a Broadcom
CPU + Atheros radio, a port is possible, and you can get some help at
the port-mips at netbsd.org mailing list. If it is an Atheros CPU+radio,
  even better.

It will be a bother to support any part with a Broadcom radio, because
Broadcom does not support open source.

Dave
