It doesn't seem to be "longer always gives errors and shorter does not".
Just sitting here repeatedly doing 'ifconfig ath0 ssid <ssid>' on my
net4511 I get error messages with both short and long SSIDs. And I've
been able to get cntwireless.net to not produce errors and cuwireless.net
to produce errors. So a certain length won't 100% trigger them.
However, it does seem that if there are no errors, replacing the SSID with
one of the same length never seems to trigger them.

And at least once I got errors no matter what SSID until I did 'ifconfig
ath0 down' and then back up.
