The two ways I've used are:

1) the 'dd' command from linux to a usb compact flash writer device (shows
    up on my system as a scsi drive).

2) PXE booting a soekris device to a point where it can download and write
    a raw image to the flash card.  This requires much more setup (tftpd,
    dhcpd, etc).
