[Imc-girls] Fwd: Co-sponsorship of TBTN?

I think this is something we participate in; unfortunately, we haven't set any processes or policies to use for determining how we spend our money. We have $185 right now, which means we could afford to donate $20 to Take Back the Night, but considering our fledgling status and the fact that we'll likely need that $20 for our kick-off weekend expenses, we may need to participate as non-payers this year. OR, all the RAGG females interested in participating in the rally could pool a couple bucks each and *maybe* we'd get to $20.

If we really want to do this, we should:

1. Get RAGG females to respond saying that they want to march. If we don't have at least 5, we might just want to participate on an individual basis.
2. Have a "banner night" where we make a banner to carry in the march to promote ourselves.
3. Consider hand-painting t-shirts on banner night, so we each have a ragg t-shirt to wear. We can also commemorate the TBTN march on the t-shirt, making our own souvenirs for this event.

Ariel - since you brought this to the group, can you take charge of seeing that these things happen? Obviously, if you don't get enough responses to #1, we don't need to continue with 2 and 3...

A.

>Dear Ally,
>On behalf of Take Back the Night (TBTN) 2004, a sub-
committee of the Sexual
>Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) planning committee, we are
writing to solicit
>the support of your organization in the mission to bring
attention to the
>issues of women’s justice, safety and empowerment. In
writing this letter, we
>hope that you will be able to offer your support in this
year's TBTN March and
>Rally to be held on April 30th.
>
>TBTN has been organized annually in Champaign-Urbana since
1978. It aims to
>publicly express women's determination to eliminate the
sexism and violence
>that plague our communities and circumscribe our lives.
Initially, the event
>aimed to protest the conditions causing women to feel unsafe
when alone at
>night on the streets. "Night" is also a metaphor for the
fear, isolation,
>coercion, and cruelty that women experience daily in a rape
culture.
>Consistent with our mission, the march and rally also
attempt to address
>issues of domestic violence, sexual violence, sexual
harassment, racism,
>homophobia, class-based injustices, denial of reproductive
freedoms,
>inadequate access to safe and affordable health care, and
discrimination
>against disabled persons.
>
>
>The event will include a rally open to men and women alike.
Male allies are
>included in some aspects of the planning process such as
fundraising,
>outreach, and organizing men’s activities during the march.
However, due to
>its nature as an unique opportunity for women to come
together on our own in
>safety and solidarity to symbolically reclaim “the night,”
the march itself is
>open to women and transgender persons only.
>
>
>In order to ensure the fullest possible impact of the march,
we aim to include
>a diverse group of women both from the C-U community and the
University of
>Illinois in its planning. While SAAM intends to contribute
resources,
>organizing, experience, and a structure to the planning, we
hope that together
>we can build a strong, diverse, and democratic community
coalition of many
>area individuals and organizations to plan the event.
>
>We hope that you will join us in supporting this year’s Take
Back the Night
>rally and march by becoming a co-sponsor of the event. We
are requesting the
>use of your organization’s name in all publicity for the
march and at the
>rally, a suggested donation of $20 (not required) and that
you help advertise
>the event to your members. Furthermore, we would be happy if
you sent a
>liaison to our planning meetings, kept us informed of your
events and ways
>that we could help, and would appreciate an opportunity to
have a member of
>our planning committee keep in touch with you. Also, we
could give a
>presentation on TBTN at one of your meetings if you are
interested.
>
>We look forward to working with you and your group on this
upcoming event.
>Sincerely,
>
