"Did You Know" section regarding Serve Illinois

Section A: Illinois (Statewide) News and Events

1) Serve Illinois Commission offices are now set-up in the new location.
 The new office is:

Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service Illinois
Department of Human Services
815 E. Monroe St.
Springfield, IL 62701-1915
(800) 592.9896 phone
(217) 557.0515 fax
- Staff desk phone numbers also have remained the same.

Please start sending any correspondence to this location, and remove old
addresses from your database. Thank you.

2)Illinois ResourceNet: A Funding Access Initiative (IRN) will convene
its second annual full‐day conference “Illinois Communities Rising:
Place‐Based Pathways to Federal Resources”, on Thursday, September 16,
2010 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The conference will be held at the UIC
Forum located at 725 W Roosevelt Rd., Chicago, IL 60608, on the corner
of Halsted Street and Roosevelt Road. After a successful conference in
2009, with more than 400 attendees, this year’s theme reflects IRN’s
signature, place‐based approach to capacity building in the federal
grants arena. That approach holds that Illinois can best improve the
flow of federal resources to organizations through continuous,
cross‐sector planning and proposal building at the regional and
community levels.Visit:
www.illinoisresource.net for more information and to register.

3) The Serve Illinois Commission will be hosting our second annual series of
Listening Session stops across Illinois. We hope that these tour dates will
help inform you as to what the Commission is doing in your area while also
helping us gain information on what you are doing, and what you need, to
benefit your community. All those who wish to contribute will be able to
make public comment about the direction of Illinois' support of service. The
listening sessions will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following
locations - view at: (
http://www2.illinois.gov/serve/Pages/listening_tour.aspx)

If you are unable to attend one of the Listening Sessions, we welcome you to
provide written feedback. You can submit written feedback by email or fax to
Scott McFarland. Email Mr. Scott McFarland or fax him at 217-557-0515. There
will also be a set of questions posted on the "Spotlight" section of the
Serve Illinois website soon.

4) Northern Illinois Flooding Update - How You Can Help: Thank you to all
who are responding in your local area to emergency needs as they arise.
Thank you to Red Cross for shelter operations, food distribution, case
management and distribution of clean up kits. Thank you to Salvation Army
for distribution of clean up kits and mobile feeding, and thank you to
United Methodists for clean up kits – and to all other unnamed responders.
Thank you to local VOADs and COADs in Quad Cities, Stephenson, Winnebago and
Cook/DuPage for your work and communication. Thank you to the American Red
Cross for quickly establishing a communication channel with IL VOAD across
the entire 12 counties affected. Here is what we know: As local responses
are active, assessment is underway, and a region-wide assessment of needs is
still evolving. The nature of floods, and the breadth of the affected area,
make this period of uncertainty very frustrating. Displaced persons,
especially renters and persons of low-income, are going to need help finding
permanent, affordable housing. Within a week, mold will become our major
enemy. Here’s what we recommend:

• The American Red Cross’s "Repairing Your Flooded Home" is being
distributing with clean-up kits. It is a comprehensive guide, and following
it will prevent mold.
• The Illinois Department of Public Health’s "After The Flood" has a
section on mold, including this excerpt from page 6: “Wear rubber gloves and
protective clothing that are easily cleaned or discarded. In addition, wear
a properly fitted N95 or HEPA filtered facemask. These masks can be
purchased at a minimal cost at a hardware store.”

In Stephenson County, to offer volunteer assistance with clean-up, please
follow the instructions at websites of Freeport (
http://www.ci.freeport.il.us/) and Stephenson County (
http://www.co.stephenson.il.us/). See also the Freeport Area Church
Cooperative Facebook page
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Freeport-Area-Church-Cooperative/323563656927.
In Cook County, member organizations with expertise in furniture
replacement or housing search counseling are encouraged to connect with your
organizational relationships in Hillside, Maywood and Bellwood, and be
responsive as these organizations reach out to you as referrals come to them
from Red Cross.

Regarding Illinois’s pursuit of a federal declaration, preliminary damage
assessment is underway in Northwest Illinois and will proceed to the Chicago
metro area. All Illinois VOAD members involved in this response are
encouraged to send me an email with a summary of your activity – we will
forward it to our FEMA voluntary agency liaison Ian Becherer-Gerrie for
inclusion in the damage assessment.

- Dave Roth, Director of Advocacy & Civic Engagement; Co-coordinator,
Lutheran Disaster Response Illinois, for the Illinois VOAD Executive
Committee. Dave can be reached at: dave_roth at lcfs.org if you have
information to share for this response or would like to become better
informed about VOAD and current or future recovery plans.

20, 2010 in Normal (see attached). A National Governor's Association Policy
Academy led by Serve Illinois Commissioner Jane Angelis who is the Director
of the Intergenerational Initiative at Southern Illinois
University-Carbondale, the initiative is a call to action for individuals,
families, and communities to boost learning, strengthen the workforce, and
enrich community life by encouraging older adults, ages 50 and older, to
lend their expertise to these areas through volunteerism. Visit:
www.law.siu.edu/GenServeGen for more information and to get involved with
this initiative on September 20th!

6) Roster of University Volunteer Fairs and Other Upcoming Events (August

Community Service CEO Patrick Corvington visited Chicago's Englewood

Mayor Daley and Chief Service Officer Jenne Myers, for remarks to nearly
2,000 students gathered in Sherman Park. Corvington had a special meeting

Section C: National News, Events, or Other Items of Interest

1) Largest Day of Service in U.S. History to Observe 10th Anniversary of
9/11 Attacks - 9/11/11: Following the passage of federal legislation that
formally established 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, a
consortium of influential private and government entities today unveiled
plans to organize the largest day of service in U.S. history in 2011 in
observance of the 10th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The plans
were announced by the 9/11 nonprofit MyGoodDeed during the National
Conference on Volunteering and Service (NCVS), the end of June in New York.
MyGoodDeed led the successful eight-year effort to secure federal
establishment of 9/11 as an annually recognized National Day of Service and
Remembrance, signed into law by President Obama in April 2009. Also
supporting these activities as members of this alliance are the federal
Corporation for National and Community Service, HandsOn Network, and the
National September 11 Memorial & Museum. "No other day has the power of
9/11 to transform our collective understanding and commitment to service,
and to engage people to step forward to help others," said David Paine,
president and co-founder of MyGoodDeed. "We are confident the entire nation
will rally around the idea of engaging in service, not only to pay tribute
to those lost and injured but also to demonstrate our resilience against
continued attempts by terrorists to do us harm. September 11 is our day, not
theirs." Stay tuned for more information on how to participate in this
significant milestone...

2) National Service Agency Announces Appointments to Key Positions: The
Corporation for National and Community Service announced the appointments of
two top social sector experts to key positions – Dr. Erwin Tan, Director of
Senior Corps and Strategic Advisor for Veterans and Military Families, and
John Kim, Senior Advisor for Change Management. Read more at:
http://www.nationalservice.gov/about/newsroom/releases_detail.asp?tbl_pr_id=1836

3) President Obama Awards 13 Citizen Service Heroes - including 2 Illinois
citizens - with Medal of Honor: The President recently awarded 13 Americans
the 2010 Citizens Medal, the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, for
their exemplary acts of service, at the White House. This year’s recipients
are powerful reminders of the impact individuals can have on their
community: a Chicago nurse and childcare professional who opened a live-in
resource center to mentor hundreds of pregnant teenagers; a school bus
driver who delivers hot meals and coffee to New York City’s homeless daily;
and a paralyzed woman who founded Kids’ Food Basket, which provides meals to
thousands of needy children in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Daisy M. Brooks and
Lisa Nigro of Chicago were among the recipients. Read their stories at:
http://www.whitehouse.gov/citizensmedal.

4) FREE Professional Development Webinars - Designed for Human
Service/Community Development Leaders: From Irv Katz, President & CEO,
National Human Services Assembly: The National Human Services Assembly
developed and is producing the 'Thursdays at Three' webinar series to help
foster continuous learning at a time when training dollars are few and far
in between. The series, actually a menu of topics for people with different
interests and responsibilities, is particularly intended for national staff
of NHSA member organizations, but we welcome your extending it to affiliates
as well. As a leader, show your staff that you care about their continuous
development, even in lean times, by encouraging them to take advantage of
this valuable resource. We are limiting participation to 200 per session,
so encourage your colleagues to register and to actually participate (did
you know that upwards of 1/3 of registrants for webinars tend to bail!).
And participate yourself. Take a look at the offerings-they're very cool:
 http://www.nationalassembly.org/documents/Webinars/LLTWebinar.pdf
