Hey US, New Orleans and Houston IMC folks:
This is Jessica, with Arizona IMC. I think a possible agenda topic should
be the consideration of putting up a new IMC site:
katrina.indymedia.org<http://katrina.indymedia.org>.
This website would be similar to ftaimc.org <http://ftaimc.org> or the
noafta.org <http://noafta.org> (althought it was hacked and deleted)
websites that are up. It seems like there is just too much information for
one website to keep up with and keep it remotely accessible for people;
also, as the "refugees" are bused around the country, it would be better to
have a main site to keep all the information centralized, rather than each
local IMC just trying to cover it.
Also, I spoke with Diane Austin who is the director of the Bureau of
Applied Research in Anthropology here at the Univ. of Arizona in Tucson.
They have done a lot of research in Southern Louisiana, in terms of the oil
industry, communities and the local environment. They are spearheading an
effort of applied anthropologists to start collecting stories from people
from the hurricane zone, not only for anthropological interest, but also it
will give us more information on what went wrong. I told her that indymedia
might have the perfect capacity for helping with such a large-scale project.
This would involved a themed indymedia site, but also local groundwork from
IMCs willing to go to the various refugee centers, setting up IMCs there,
and helping people document their stories. Also, I think we should
coordinate with international IMCs, specificially latin american IMCs, to
start getting communication going between possible undocumented migrants and
their families south of our border.
Arizona IMC is helping the Tucson Convention Center set up an information
commons to get the refugees connected through the internet to friends,
family, insurance filing, health stuff, AND radical information. It would be
awesome if any other local IMCs can help coordinate such efforts. If you
already have, I'd be interested in talking with you.
So for the agenda for Tuesday's meeting, I would like to propose the idea
of katrina.indymedia.org <http://katrina.indymedia.org> and the various
subtopics that would go along with the site. I have no tech knowledge, so I
unfortunately would have to pass on the responsibility to someone else. The
second agenda item would be on the ground coordination between IMCs that
have refugee centers in their hometown. At least get us talking to each
other.
I'll do my best to make the meeting.
Thanks!
Jessica
