Results from the Racial Climate Survey, scheduled to be released today
(Monday, Dec. 11), have been put on hold pending ongoing discussions
with Champaign Unit #4 school officials. The survey results are
tentatively scheduled to be released publicly at an Unit #4 School
Board meeting in January, 2001, or early February.

This survey, which was completed by students, parents, teachers, and
staff of Unit #4 Schools, was conducted in response to a 1997 Champaign
Board of Education resolution to address equity issues in the Champaign
schools. The ultimate goal of the survey project is to improve the
quality of education for all students in Champaign public schools by
gathering different viewpoints on equity issues and generating discus-
sion from these viewpoints.

The survey was conducted by the University of Illinois School Climate
Research Team, which was hired to create and carry out the Racial
Climate Survey for Champaign Unit #4 Schools.
