We should be working closely with WEFT to plan Pacifica substitutes.
Perhaps folks can go to the Programming Committee meeting Thursday Oct 26
at 7 PM.

Subject: DN!'s Amy Goodman in peril

Dear WEFTies,

Democracy Now! (DN!) the award-winning watch dog public affairs program
anchored and produced by Amy Goodman and owned by Pacifica is under
direct attack (see forwarded note from a WBAI reporter at the end of my
email). We have no idea how much longer Amy will remain with the
program or if the program will exist with a new host. Any change in
host or watering down of content will be cause to reconsider the
carrying of DN! in the WEFT schedule (M-F 4-5pm). This attack on DN! is
another example of the crumbling of Pacifica. Community radio stations
across the country are choosing to address the situation in different
ways: some want to save Pacifica, and now DN! and others believe
Pacifica is lost and choose to put their energies and money in starting
a new independent network that would better serve affiliates and to
which volunteers at these affiliate stations could contribute stories.
Locally, there are efforts to create an independent media center that
could serve WEFT with local news and public affairs and perhaps
contribute to a nationwide network. Current WEFTies including Danielle,
Paul R, Peter, and Zach (sorry if I missed anyone) are working on this
independent media center.

The WEFT Programming Committee will be discussing our options in light
of the pending DN! crisis at our meeting next Thursday at WEFT. We will
also talk about how to get word to our listeners of the crises and
mounting challenges. Your input is valued and requested at the meeting
and through email and by any other means.

Please also note that even if DN! and/or Pacifica goes away, the 4-6pm
M-F public affairs slot will be preserved via the newly revised standard
operating procedures as passed by the PC, the Associates, and the Board
this year.

In struggle but with hope,
Kimberlie
Associates-elected Programming Committee member whose opinions are her
own and do not necessarily reflect those of the rest of the members of
the PC or the station manager

Free-Speech Comrades:

I spoke to Amy Goodman tonight. She was in fact given a letter by
Pacifica threatening her with termination if she does not abide by a
strict set of work rules. Amy is concerned that all of us not get
bogged down in the details of this letter. It's not a privacy issue,
she says, but about focus. These work rules will effectively crush
her ability to produce Democracy Now! as we know it. According to
Amy, this is a direct, political attack on the content of her show,
and her parting thought was, the situation is dire.

I encourage all of you to do everything you can to get the word out
to listeners and affiliate stations across the country. The
ever-glorious Andrea Buffa of Media Alliance in San Franciso has
reached out to us here in New York about possibly building a national
action in support of saving Pacifica and Democracy Now! from the
throws of this coup.

Here at WBAI, Pacifica has already seized fiscal control of the
station. Everyone is encouraged to find a listener group in your
area. If you don't have one, create one. Time is of the essence.
The next New York meeting will be in about 10 days. The exact day
and time will be posted. Anyone receiving this is welcome to contact
me for more information.
