For decision making at Sunday's Steering Meeting:

Proposed IMC Electronic Equipment Use Policy
Paul Riismandel, 6/28/01

There are two types of equipment used by the IMC: public-use equipment and
member-use equipment.

PUBLIC-USE EQUIPMENT
Includes: public-access Internet computers and any other equipment made
available to the public in the front room.
Public-use equipment is open to use by the public at the IMC space,
according to any relevant IMC policies. Public-use equipment may not be
loaned to or removed from the IMC by non-members. Public-use equipment
should not be removed from the space except for repair and maintenance, or
for emergency purposes

MEMBER-USE EQUIPMENT
Includes: production equipment, sound equipment, staff computers, etc.
Member-use equipment may be used only by current IMC members. Restrictions
may be placed on the use of IMC equipment according to the needs of IMC
working groups and according to the fragility and complexity of the equipment.

EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE
The IMC-Tech group is responsible for the maintenance of all IMC electronic
equipment and ensuring the equipment is accessible and useable for IMC
projects, in coordination with other relevant working groups.

USE RESTRICTIONS
The Tech group has primary responsibility for the maintenance and safety of
IMC equipment so that it is accessible and useful for IMC
projects. Therefore the Tech group has the right to make reasonable
restrictions on equipment use for these purposes.

Specifically, the Tech and News group may place restrictions on who can use
equipment, and on the borrowing of equipment. The Tech group may require
orientation and/or training on the proper use of certain items if this
group believes such is necessary for the proper and productive use of that
item. The Tech group may also disallow the lending of some equipment, such
as computers, VCRs or other equipment not intended to be portable.

The News group may, at its discretion, reserve the use of certain items for
its exclusive use. In such cases the News group is responsible for
maintaining an accurate list of News group members who may use reserved
equipment.

Other working groups may reserve exclusive use of equipment in coordination
with the Tech and News groups.

EQUIPMENT RESERVATIONS
The Tech group is responsible for having a reservation system in place for
all member-use equipment and for having a check-out procedure for borrowing
equipment.
The Tech group is responsible for obtaining an accurate member list to be
used in checking out equipment. When reserving exclusive use of equipment,
other working groups are responsible for providing user lists to the Tech
Group.

EQUIPMENT TRAINING
The Tech group is responsible for organizing training and orientation
sessions for IMC member-use equipment. The Tech group may not place
training requirements on the use of certain equipment without also offering
accessible training for that equipment. Tech should coordinate training
with other working groups, responsive to their needs.

MEMBER/USER RESPONSIBILITIES
IMC member-use equipment is intended to be accessible and useful to all
qualified IMC members in the pursuit of IMC projects. Damaged, broken or
missing equipment is neither accessible nor useful, and compromises the
ability of IMC members to do their work. Therefore, IMC members who use
and/or borrow equipment are wholly responsible for its use, welfare and return.

While some wear and tear is expected, IMC members are expected to use
caution in avoiding unnecessary damage. Users and borrowers are
responsible for acquiring the necessary training for using any equipment,
and damage due to improper use or lack of training will not be excused.

Equipment users are expected to be respectful of other IMC members, and
therefore should not unnecessarily monopolize equipment, and are expected
to respect any rules or restrictions placed on equipment use or
borrowing. Repeated failure to respect such rules and restrictions may
cause an IMC member to lose privileges to any or all equipment, at the
discretion of the Tech, News and Steering groups.

If equipment is damaged or lost while in the possession of an IMC member,
that member may be held responsible for its repair or replacement at the
discretion of the Tech, Finance and Steering Groups. Failure to make fair
compensation for damaged or missing equipment may lead to the loss of
equipment privileges or IMC membership, at the discretion of the Steering
Group.
