  Media Shine Spotlight on Philanthropy

As reported in a September article in American Journalism
Review, major media outlets across the United States upped
their coverage of philanthropy and the nonprofit sector
in 2000. Driven by public interest in the lifestyles of
newly minted dot-com millionaires, media outlets extended
their reporting to the charitable activities of so-called
"new philanthropists" and the nonprofit sector in general.

Major dailies such as the Washington Post, the San Jose
Mercury News, the Los Angeles Times, and the New York
Times devoted significant column inches to nonprofit issues
during the year, while business-oriented publications such
as Fortune, Forbes, and Barron's focused their attention
on a range of donor-related issues.

In other developments, AScribe, a public interest wire
service based in Oakland, California, was launched with an
eye to bringing independent sources of news to the atten-
tion of the nation's media organizations and to restoring
a healthier balance in the coverage of important public
  interest stories by mainstream media.

Foundations, too, recognized the need for a more proactive
approach to the media. In Bethesda, Maryland, Burness
Communications announced the launch of the Foundation
Media Relations Project, a two-year initiative designed to
support the efforts of foundations and five regional asso-
ciations of grantmakers to improve foundations' relations
  with print and broadcast journalists.

The 2nd link is about ABC No Rio's activist community news site in NYC:
interactivist.net. The 4th link is about ascribe.org, an alternative
newswire service. Worth looking into. Good to see the connections btwn
indy journalism and nonprofit coverage.
