Press Conference to Introduce UC Smile Design
October 8th, 10:30am Café Piato in Lincoln Square
Urbana-Champaign, October 4, 2012:

Some local currencies will soon have tints of new colors.  UC Smiles is name of the local currency of Urbana-Champaign. We will be showing our new currencies at the press conference.

At least 34 local businesses in Urbana and Champaign will add a new colorful currency as a local economy and community spirit boost.  Coming in denominations of ones, fives and twenties, UC Smiles go into circulation by November 1.

The new currencies, made counterfeit-resistant, have been beautifully designed by Dennis P. Roberts, Urbana City Council member (Phone: 344-0069). Coming in a splash of colors, the front sides show pictures of nature, including river and darter, prairie and kestrel, forest and morel.  Equally colorful, the different reverse sides display local history, including an 1883 group photo of the Settler’s Society, an 1891 picture of the Champaign-Urbana Street Railway, as well as the ‘Alma Mater’ sculpture at the U of I.

To get the new currencies into people’s hands, UC Smiles is selling the currencies and establishing the 100 Smiles Club.  Anyone buying at least 20 Smiles before November 1, 2012 can join the club and are encouraged to attend the UC Smiles party. Anyone who is interested in UC Smiles movement can join the party. This takes place October 27 at 4 PM at the Independent Media Center.

People can purchase UC Smiles at the party or at the information table at Strawberry Fields, Urban, any Saturday morning (10:00-12:00), or email ucsmilesforyou at gmail.com<mailto:ucsmilesforyou at gmail.com>.  After Nov. 1, UC Smiles can be bought inside at Strawberry Fields, or at International Galleries in Lincoln Square.
