[IMC] Champaign Schools to Host Summer Magnet Institute

Champaign Unit #4 School District will host its Summer Magnet Institute August 5-7 at the Hilton Garden Inn Conference Center in Champaign. The institute will feature three nationally-recognized speakers.

"Our magnet school teachers will engage in a world-class professional development opportunity at the Summer Magnet Institute," says Angela Smith, Assistant Superintendent for Achievement and Equity. "National experts and practitioners will share their experiences and inspire this group of Champaign educators as they reflect, discuss, and create action plans around the topics of cultural responsiveness, parent engagement, and understanding by design."

Champaign Unit #4 Schools were awarded a multi-million dollar federal grant for its magnet programs, which has funded this high-level professional development experience for Unit 4's educators. Participating schools include the District's three magnet elementary schools: Booker T. Washington STEM Academy, Garden Hills International Baccalaureate PYP Candidate School, and Stratton Leadership & MicroSociety.

This year's conference will feature keynotes from the following speakers at 8:30 a.m. each day:
-              Monday, August 5: Dr. Carol Dweck - "Mindset & Education"
-              Tuesday, August 6: Alex Kotlowitz - "Being Poor in the World's Richest Nation"
-              Wednesday, August 7: Guy Doud - National Teacher of the Year - "Molder of Dreams"

Teachers will also break out into three workshops following the keynotes each day to learn how to apply these concepts to their everyday instruction. Concepts that will be discussed include Culturally Responsive Education, Authentic Parent Engagement, and Understanding by Design.
