40 North | 88 West Announces 2013 Boneyard Signature Image and
Boneyard Connect Social for the 11th Annual Boneyard Arts Festival

Champaign County -  40 North | 88 West - Champaign County's Arts Council - is pleased to announce the Signature Image for the 2013 Boneyard Arts Festival taking place April 11-14. After evaluating all of the outstanding submissions, a panel of local arts professionals selected Leif Olson's acrylic on paper "Rover" to be the signature image of the 2013 Boneyard Arts Festival!



"Rover" made an immediate impression on the panel and stood out as a dynamic, eye-catching, and colorful image that captured the spirit of the 11th anniversary. Originally from San Francisco and a 1973 graduate of California College of Arts in Oakland, Olson moved to Champaign about 6 years ago. To a great extent his work deals with the individual in relation to his environment or with individuals in relation to each other. He is currently represented by Cinema Gallery in Urbana. "Perhaps if there is a point to all of this is that the things that bind us and keep us vibrant are also elusive and made of magical elements contrary to logic of the laws of nature."



The judging panel for the Boneyard signature image consisted of Kurt Bielema, graphic designer and owner of Single Stereo; Natalie Fiol, Art Director at Adam's Outdoor Advertising and Membership Director of the Champaign-Urbana Design Organization; Melissa Mitchell, local artist, 2012 Signature Image creator, and volunteer communications coordinator at I.D.E.A. Store; Jimmy Luu, assistant professor at the School of Art and Design and Coordinator of Figure One; and Jason Michael Bentley, local artist and Graphic Designer at Health Alliance.


Natalie Fiol: "Like the Boneyard Arts Festival, this image is full of life and artistic energy, making it a perfect choice for the signature image. There's something for everyone within it."

Melissa Mitchell: "The jurying experience confirmed what I've known all along - Champaign-Urbana is chock-full of amazing visual artists of all stripes and colors, creating in every medium imaginable. Choosing just one image that communicates the energy of the Boneyard Arts Festival was a challenge. But in the end, I think the one selected will grab everyone's attention and scream 'Spring art party here! Be there! ... or stay home and miss out big-time!' "

Jimmy Luu: "I was drawn to this image because of its layered approach to both visual and conceptual language. Because of this, I thought it could speak to the many varied forms of art represented at the boneyard arts festival, and ultimately to the exuberance of our burgeoning creative community an Champaign-Urbana."


Jason Michael Bentley: "I think an image used to represent something bigger than itself should be engaging, eclectic, and accessible. This piece by Leif Olson speaks to a broad audience with playfulness and artistic spontaneity, yet doesn't leave the viewer bored or scratching their head."




Boneyard Connect social to take place at 88 Broadway in Lincoln Square



The Urbana Business Association (UBA) presents Boneyard Connect, an artist and venue social for the Boneyard Arts Festival on Tuesday, February 12th, from 5:30-7:30 P.M. at 88 Broadway, in Lincoln Square, Urbana. Enjoy a complimentary buffet provided by Piato and display tables will be available for artists to showcase their work. The event is free to attend and open to everyone interested in presenting an exhibit, event, or live performance during the Boneyard Arts Festival.


The Boneyard Blog

The Boneyard Blog (boneyardartsfestival.wordpress.com) is an interactive online tool to help artists and venues connect with one another and make plans for the Boneyard Arts Festival. The blog features complete information on how to participate, space for artists and venues to list info and find others to work with, frequently asked questions, registration materials, news updates and more.
