Dear Ed Hawkes,
As the Community Involvement Coordinator at Urbana High School, I am writing to ask if you can help the students of UHS with an upcoming service project, UHS Blanket-A-Thon. This project will involve diverse student groups working together to create 120 no-sew fleece blankets. The blankets will be donated to patients at the C-U Dialysis Center. (See details below). UHS Blanket-A-Thon will provide warmth to our community while also providing UHS students with unique opportunities for leadership and service.

I hope you'll be able to help us. Any donation (fleece fabric or money) will be greatly appreciated!

UHS Blanket-A-Thon an Urbana High School Service Project
What is UHS Blanket-A-Thon?
Students and mentors from UHS Mentor Programs, students from UHS Operation Snowball, students from UHS cultural clubs (African-American, Latino/Latina and Asian-American) and other interested students will work together to create 120 no-sew fleece blankets for donation to the patients of the C-U Dialysis Center.

How will students and community members benefit from this project?
Benefits to the Urbana Community:

· The C-U Dialysis Center serves approximately 120 patients. The majority of these patients are low income, elderly adults. This project will make these citizens more visible in our community.

· Dialysis patients typically spend several hours twice per week connected to machines that filter their blood. One unpleasant side effect of dialysis is that patients feel chilled during and after treatments. By creating and donating warm fleece blankets this winter, our UHS students will bring warmth to needy local citizens.
Benefits to Urbana High School Students:

· Students will learn leadership skills as they take responsibility for planning and executing this project.

· Students will interact with and get to know other students from a variety of different backgrounds as they work together to reach a goal.

· Students will experience the joy of serving others - an especially important experience for students who have typically been the recipients of volunteer projects.

How will Blanket-A-Thon Work?
Once materials have been collected, (donations of money and/or fleece), a Saturday in February will be designated as "Blanket-A-Thon Day" at UHS. Students will assemble the blankets under the leadership of student project coordinators. When completed, a representative group of students will deliver the blankets to the C-U Dialysis Center. Local media will be invited to cover both events.
PLEASE HELP US REACH OUR GOAL!
In order to carry out the UHS Blanket-A-Thon, we need donations of fabric, or money to purchase fabric. To make 110 blankets*, we will need 220 pieces of fleece fabric (1 ½ yard per piece) or approximately $880 dollars ($8/blanket).

We invite you and your business to support the UHS Blanket-A-Thon by:
1. Donating money for the purchase of fabric.
                                    2. Donating fleece fabric (1 ½ yard pieces in any color or pattern)
Donations of any size are greatly appreciated!
Special Donation Categories:
A Donation of $100 = Official UHS Blanket-A-Thon Sponsor
A Donation of $50 = Friend of UHS Blanket-A-Thon

Names of donors will be shared with local media and recorded in the Urbana School District Monthly Report.

Checks may be sent to:
