PREVIEW
WHAT'S COMING UP IN JULY?

Bow-Dacious String Band

Happy 10th Anniversary
Bow-Dacious String Band!
The 10th annual Bow-Dacious String Band (BSB) summer camp is coming up on July 14;
we still have room to include string players age 8 and up who would like to join
 us.
BSB started in the summer of 2003 as a lark, just a fun little week of playing to
introduce my violin students to new kinds of music they could play, mostly folk
tunes from the US and around the world. At the end of that week they informed me
 that we would keep the group together and that they would invite their friends
to join. We've never looked back!
Over the years the band has grown: It's gotten larger and added staff. We know
more tunes, and we've added other instruments.
What hasn't changed is the kind regard band members have for each other and their
unbridled enthusiasm for playing and sharing music with each other and with our
community.
The energy that gathers around the Bow-Dacious String Band was the driving force
 leading to the founding of the Community Center for the Arts, and the band's philosophy
of fostering individual excellence in the context of a group collaboration is at
 the core of all of our programming.
You can read more about Bow-Dacious below, and catch our next performance at the
 Urbana Sweet Corn festival on August 24.

C4A Well-Represented at UPO Concert
The Urbana Pops Orchestra's June 8 concert was really fun--all space themed music--and
featured lots of C4A-related performers!
Faculty members Amanda Ramey and Chris Petterson were in the ranks of professionals,
along with Bow-Dacious String Band Alums Aaron Schwartz and Christopher Wendt.
Current C4A students included Noah Larson, Stella Faux, Dante Freund, and Isaac
Henry.
In addition to C4A personnel, the performance was populated with local professionals,
student interns, and included a visit from Darth Vader and some of his "friends"
 from the Midwest Garrison.

Banjo Workshop with Stephen Wade

Stephen Wade playing in C4A's "big room"

On June 11 the celebrated banjoist, folklorist, and writer Stephen Wade returned
 to C4A for the second of two marathon banjo workshops.

The workshops were fantastic: we played various old-time two-finger styles, traded
banjos around, and talked at length about Flemming Brown, Hobart Smith, Frank Proffitt,
Dave Macon, and other old-time banjo saints.

Stephen Wade is the author of The Beautiful Music All Around Us: Field Recordings
and the American Experience (University of Illinois Press), a fascinating and poetic
account of the making of a dozen of the Library of Congress renowned field recordings.
 He has also recently released an hour-long CD titled "Banjo Diary: Lessons from
Tradition (Smithsonian Folkways).

MEET SOME OF C4A'S STUDENTS:
Bow-Dacious String Band Mentors

Some BSB mentors getting ready for a photo: Celia Faux, Sean Barber, Paula Norato,
Stella Faux, with Alum-Mentor Beau Barber.

When BSB was just getting started a pattern that quickly emerged was older students
encouraging the younger ones and helping them learn how to play tricky parts in
our tunes.

The practice of seasoned players helping younger players expanded to include acclimating
newcomers to the band and continued to develop until, at a certain point, it seemed
that we should designate student teachers, who were dubbed "mentors."

In its official capacity, the mentor program has become more standardized; mentors
are paired into teams--one melody player and one rhythm player--and each set of
mentors is in charge of directing its own mini-band for a part of our weekly rehearsal
time. Mentors meet with the director to discuss the progress of their groups, receive
instruction on teaching, and just hang out and jam together.

Our formalized mentor program is in its fourth season; last year's mentors were
Ashish Bhatt, Celia Faux, Stella Faux, Emanuel Hope, Marina Hope, Bridget Mueller-Brennan,
Paula Norato, and Ali Slaughter.

Kids who play in Bow-Dacious learn life skills that go beyond the tunes they play:
responding in the moment, presenting yourself confidently, stepping up when it's
 your turn, looking out for each other, stage deportment, and more.

I thought our readers would enjoy hearing about this from mentors' perspectives,
 so here are some thoughts that came up in conversations we had during an interview
I conducted with some of them:

RK: Being a mentor means you spend extra time and have more responsibility. What
 do you get out of it? What are some of your challenges, and what have you learned
in dealing with them?

Responses to this question yielded many ideas, but one particular word popped up
 more than any other: patience.

MH: ...some skills of patience and responsibility.

SB: Patience because working with kids is tough; you just have to keep calm and
work it out.

EH: ...to be patient and slow down to the student's level.

PN: It takes a lot of patience to be able to sit down with a group of five little
kids and teach them all a song!

Classroom management skills were also mentioned frequently; although the members
 of the band are there voluntarily, they are still subject to finite attention spans
and sometimes get a little chatty.

PN: A challenge that I encountered would definitely be the kids' energy. High energy
is sometimes a good thing, but when the kids are bouncing in their seats and talking
about everything but the song we're learning, it can be quite the hassle. But it
 all worked out after we started a method for acknowledging good posture, behavior,
and taking solos.

MH: I encountered lots of attention issues, mostly because I was dealing with younger
students. Paula and I just had to keep the material interesting and change songs
 frequently.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another classroom management challenge that every teacher faces is keeping students
engaged, and mini-bands are no exception.
BMB: The main challenge for me as a mentor was to keep mini-band time fun but to
 also get work done. I had trouble finding the line between the kids being bored
 and all of us goofing off. I think that as the season went on, I got a better judgment
of where that line lies.
SF: One of the challenges we had to deal with was getting people in our groups to
step up and be involved. In my group especially, we had great musicians but they
 were all very soft-spoken. It's okay to not be really extroverted all the time
but sometimes we wanted to get feedback from the students or hear opinions. In those
cases I would usually just call on people.
RK: Are there other skills you feel you have developed as a mentor that will help
you in other areas of your life?
SF: Mostly interaction stuff. Like how to tell the kids you're mentoring what you
want from them in a clear and understandable way without being bossy or overbearing.
MH: Paula and I always try to get people smiling and looking like they're having
 fun, so having a positive attitude has helped me with the new schools I've been
 in.
EH:  Being a mentor has forced me to be more firm with younger children, like my
 cousins!
PN: Over the summer I work at a camp with little kids. Thanks to my experience with
working with the kids in Bow-Dacious, I had a good idea on how to work well with
 the kids at the camp.
RK:  Do you have any stories or thoughts to share about working with your mini-bands?
MH: Everyone in the group teased each other (in a friendly way) like a family.
SB: That when you work one-on-one with the kid they are really awesome and you learn
a lot.
RK:  Do you have any stories you'd like to share about working with the other mentors?
MH: I love all the mentors!!! They are some of my best friends and I always have
 a great time around them!
EH: The mentors are awesome people to hang out with and it's hard to choose a specific
moment that stands out more than the rest--although I fondly remember our mentor
 meetings where we would eat pizza and jam.
SF: Nothing in particular. I mean, each week something new happens so it's impossible
to choose! We're all good friends and it's just great to hang out, play music and
teach together! We have a lot of fun.
BMB:. The mentors form a pretty tight group and I love spending time with them.
It's really nice to have that extra time after practice when we can jam together
 at a higher level, as well as just hang out.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Emanuel Hope and Ashi Bhatt

RK: Are there any other thoughts you'd like to share about Bow-Dacious?

PN. Probably just how fun each Bow-Dacious summer camp was. Not only did I learn
 a ton of things with music and my violin, I also made a lot of friends and had
a lot of fun.

BMB: Bow-Dacious is a really great program because it gets all of us with the common
interest of music together to play. The best thing about Bow-Dacious, however, is
that it is a lot of fun for everyone involved. Sure there are lots of different
groups around where you can go and play music (I've been in several), but in my
opinion, Bow-Dacious is the most fun by far!

SF: Yeah, it's unique! I mean classical music is awesome but it's not the only type
you can play on the violin. The music we play in Bow-Dacious is a cool alternative!

MH: BSB is a great community to be in, everyone is friendly and I have learned so
much. I've also made some of my closest friends in this group.

SB: That being in BSB is awesome and I want to stay here forever!!!
