Building A Global Community

University Y announces new global engagement partnerships

What: This fall the University YMCA is initiating five new global engagement partnerships
that are designed to strengthen our work in meeting needs here on campus, in the
local community and around the world. The five new global engagement partnerships
are International Service Learning Initiative, Global Health Initiative, Intercultural
Horizons, Intercambio Cultural Maya, and Immigrant Friendly Communities.University
Y partners include the Illinois Global Health Initiative, the School of Social
Work, CU Immigration Forum, Intercambio, Y-Micro Lending Project, and Engineers
Without Borders.

Why: The aim of this partnership program is to combine University Y resources with
those of partner groups to develop new global initiatives that will maximize the
converging goals of both organizations in ways that would not be possible if each
were acting alone.

How: Using a legacy gift from the Cosmopolitan Club as seed funding, our International
Programming committee spent much of last year reaching out across campus and the
community to develop new partnerships that are innovative, sustainable and promote
cross-community cooperation.

On Intercultural Horizons: All University Y global engagement partnerships	are	innovative,
sustainable, promote growth	and	cross-community cooperation, including groups
beyond Urbana-Champaign. For instance, the Intercultural Horizons project seeks
to recruit a cohort of domestic and international students would participate
in a semester curriculum designed to encourage a richer and more meaningful
interaction and dialogue between international and domestic students on campus.
The cohort would also participate in local service projects with the goal of
an international service trip. Students participating in the project would be
encouraged to become advocates or change agents on campus seeking to instigate
new efforts in their dorms, departments and social and academic circles.

Quote: University YMCA Executive Director, Mike Doyle, on Intercultural Horizons:
"One of the reoccurring themes we encountered when looking into new Global Engagement
Initiatives was the need to improve and increase the amount of meaningful interaction
between international and domestic students on the Urbana-Champaign campus." says
Mike Doyle, Executive Director of the University YMCA. "Global engagement partnerships
at the Y engage people in developing cultural competencies and the key skills
to collaborate with people on campus, at home, and around the world."
