Filmapalooza 2016 Slated For Atlanta

Atlanta, Georgia hosts WALKING DEAD, ANT-MAN, HUNGER GAMES and now… the 48
Hour Film Project’s [2]FILMAPALOOZA! The 14th Annual Filmapalooza will be
held March 2 – 6, 2016.

Filmapalooza is the 48HFP's international competition and festival, filled
with screenings, networking events, workshops & panels, parties, and tons
of opportunities to meet up and have fun with other 48HFP filmmakers from
all around the world. We will screen all of the 2015 city-winning films and
present the official 48HFP Best Film trophies, as well as determine our
international award-winning films and crown one of them the Best 48HFP Film
in the World! Filmapalooza is open to all filmmakers, even if you didn't
win your city's 48HFP!

As one of the longest running 48HFP cities, Atlanta has been chosen to give
our filmmakers a thrilling festival experience that is accessible,
affordable and rich in TV and Film Production behind-the-scenes
opportunities.

Georgia is one of the world's top production juggernauts--hosting series
like WALKING DEAD, VAMPIRE DIARIES, and SLEEPY HOLLOW, and features
starring Tom Cruise, Michael Keaton, and Ben Affleck. There are over 40
productions currently shooting in Georgia:

Four Points Film Project Returns In November

[5]Need another dose of weekend filmmaking? Check out the [6]Four Points
Film Project which will be returning this November 13th-16th. The 4PFP is
the official sister competition to the 48HFP and is open to all filmmakers
around the world...even if they don't live in a city with its own local
48HFP event.

The 4PFP follows the same basic idea of the 48HFP--to write, produce, and
edit a short film in just a weekend using elements that aren't revealed
until 7pm on Friday, November 13th. However the 4PFP is completely
online--elements are announced via email and all films are submitted online
before the local deadline. All on-time 4PFP films are judged by a panel of
film professionals, with the winning 4PFP film winning a grand prize of
$3,000USD. In addition the winning film will screen at next year's Cannes
Film Festival! The top 15 submitted films (on-time and late) will be placed
online for Audience Choice voting. The Audience Choice winner will receive
$1,000USD.

More details about this year's competition will be posted soon at
[7]http://fourpointsfilmproject.com. Registration will open in early
September, so start putting your team together now!

Los Angeles Sets A New 48HFP World Record

Earlier in August, the [10]Los Angeles 48HFP set a new world record by
kicking off with a monumental 174 teams, breaking the previous record of
173 teams held by Paris. Early in the morning of August 7th, Team
Benchwarmers signed up, pushing the city over the top to break the world
record. Every year, filmmakers in Hollywood and

Hundreds of filmmakers swarm the Dropoff in the LA 48HFP

other LA areas have lines up in the hundreds to participate in the 48HFP.
Multi-year participant JT Billings of Izzo Entertainment says "This
competition has evolved from a simple festival to a rite of passage for LA
filmmakers. You simply must do it."

Congratulations to LA 48HFP Producers Leanne & Michael Westphal, along with
all of the LA filmmakers for making the 48HFP such an awesome event! Fun
Fact: It will take 12 separate screenings over the course of six days to
screen all of this year's LA48HFP films!

Hacking Kickstarter For Filmmakers (Part Two)

Last month we brought you the first half of our two-part article about how
filmmakers can get raise funds for filmmaking on [57]Kickstarter (read
[58]Hacking Kickstarter For Filmmakers-Part One). This month we're back
with our Minneapolis 48HFP Producer [59]Ryan Strandjord for the second half
of this series, where he goes into more detail about what perks are best to
offer funders, what stage you should start to raise money, and his specific
timeline and tips for using Kickstarter. Ryan definitely knows his
stuff--he has raised over $270,000 crowdfunding two different film projects
and several food-industry related projects. In fact, one of his most recent
projects, the [60]Herbivorous Butcher, was featured in this week's Sunday
edition of the [61]New York Times. Ryan gives some great advice on running
a Kickstarter campaign for filmmakers, so make sure you take notes for when
you crowdfund your next film project.

[62][jpeg]
Need some ideas for perks? Check out Kickstarter's blog for [63]96
different reward ideas

48HFP: Gearing more towards filmmakers--what are some of the perks you've
offered funders that really get them excited to fund projects?

Stranjord: The things that make the biggest impact with funders are
exclusive experiences that can only be earned through the campaign. Things
like DVDs and Blu-Rays and posters are cool, but people really want to see
what they look like before they give money. And those things have certain
material costs, printing and packaging costs, and can be an investment of
your own time, but a lot of the experiences you can give a funder are free.
Some of the most exciting perks are the ones that actually connect the
funders more closely to the project--things like special screenings, or
inviting funders to a cast & crew wrap party. When you're putting together
your list of potential donors, think about the things that they would
personally be most interested in.

Also, it's a good idea to have several levels of funding below $50 to
really help maximize your revenue. Your friends may not be able give you
$100 or $1000, but they may be able to kick in $10 to help you out. If you
don't have options for funding smaller monetary amounts, that's a lot of
money you could potentially be missing out on.

48HFP: At what stage would you recommend a film project be in when you
start to raise money? For example, do you need a complete script, do you
need storyboard, should you shoot a trailer, etc.?

Strandjord: Raising money during post is always a strong choice because you
have a lot of materials you can use to promote the project, and it's a time
where you'll usually need a lot of finishing funds for things like effects
and marketing.

Now if you're raising money for actual production work you obviously won't
have things in the can yet. In this case it's important to have a strong
script in place already. You should also be able to talk strongly and
concisely about exactly what the film is and what it means to you. It's not
vital to have a teaser at this stage, but you definitely want to showcase
your previous work, especially work that is similar to the project you're
raising funds for. Sometimes it's actually better to not have a teaser--you
definitely don't want to make a bad teaser or people won't have confidence
in the project.

48HFP: Can you take use through the timeline for a typical Kickstarter
campaign that you've run?

Strandjord: So much success is actually dependent on what happens before
you launch. This is where you're really going to need to get the word out
to your personal contacts and friends and family so when launch day comes
people are already prepped and ready to donate. Think through the things
you can do to get people excited about the project when you do kick things
off. You really need to start strong or people think you won't hit your
goal. As a general benchmark, you should be looking to be 30% funded in the
first three days of your campaign, otherwise you're at risk of not raising
enough money in the allotted time.

I've personally found that 28 days is a solid amount of time for the length
of a campaign. Of course it's important to promote throughout the time
period, but most activity tends to happen in the first three days and the
last three days--nobody cares about the middle of the campaign, so make
sure you bookend your promotions and activities accordingly. You could
potentially have a shorter timeframe for the campaign, but only if you've
already built up an audience, have a strong following, and have strong but
limited perks for funders.

48HFP: Are there any words of wisdom or resources you'd like to recommend
to filmmakers trying to raise funds for their projects?

Strandjord: It's going to be harder than you think--treat this as a 24/7
project or you won't raise the money. Don't be making the film while you're
fundraising. You should create content to help promote things, but don't be
caught up in the middle of production, focus on the fundraising portion.

Make sure you do your research--find similar campaigns, contact other
filmmakers through Kickstarter, and check out film forums to find out what
other people are doing. As a filmmaker, you really should be running a
crowdfunding campaign even if you don't need the money. It helps you
connect with your audience. It's a scary prospect, but a huge and important
part of your career as a filmmaker.
