Dear Friend,

Those who might think the life of an immigrant is easy in the U.S. should hear Lupe Lopez's story. It starts in Chiapas, Mexico, where as an eight year old she began working to help support her family. Between the ages of 12 and 15, Lupe worked on a banana plantation until unwanted advances from her supervisor compelled her to quit. Next came an emotionally wrenching decision: she would leave her parents and siblings -- a tight-knit and loving family -- and move to Colorado, where her aunt lived, so she could find work and send money home.

In Denver, she met her husband, and the couple had four children, all U.S. citizens. "Things were going well," Lupe says, until a fateful day in September, 2012. Returning to Colorado from a wedding in California, a state patrolman pulled them over for going eight miles over the speed limit. At the time, Colorado state police acted as agents for Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE). The couple was arrested for being undocumented and placed in deportation proceedings. Due to the huge backlog of deportation cases, their court date is set for 2019. It's heartbreaking to imagine the impact on their four children if Lupe and her husband are deported.

Lupe decided she needed to act. She got involved with AFSC programs that work for lasting change for peace and justice.

I'm sure you agree with me that the world needs change makers now more than ever. An especially generous supporter of AFSC agrees, and every gift you make to AFSC now will be matched dollar-for-dollar, up to $1 million. Please donate today to have your gift doubled! https://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50601/p/salsa/donation/common/public/?donate_page_KEY=12401&lgacf=0.00

Lupe attended AFSC nonviolent direct action trainings and has become a gifted leader in Denver's Not One More Table, where those enmeshed in deportation proceedings come together to share information and strategize next steps to stop deportation. Lupe has also started another group -- defiantly named Mojados United, or Wetbacks United -- to share deportation stories and provide each other moral support. She is a brave change maker.

AFSC stands with men and women like Lupe who have the courage to speak up for a more peaceful, tolerant, and just world. Please make a generous donation today to support these change makers in their efforts to create pivotal change for our world. https://salsa3.salsalabs.com/o/50601/p/salsa/donation/common/public/?donate_page_KEY=12401&lgacf=0.00

These amazing change makers like Lupe inspire me every day. And I hope they inspire you, too, because their stories would simply not be possible without the support of generous donors.

Sincerely,

Shan Cretin
