Makerspace Folks - I talked to someone (Emily?) at the Maker Faire about
the possibility of starting a grant application for the Makerspace through
our Yahoo Employee Foundation (YEF).

 Here are the details of what YEF will and won't fund, let me know if this
is something you would like to pursue. The timeframe for submitting a grant
would be in early 2014.

Type of projects funded by YEF

YEF funds organizations that are considered tax exempt 501(c)3, an
educational institution or operating under the fiscal sponsorship of a tax
exempt 501(c)3 organization (organizations under the fiscal sponsorship of
a tax exempt 501(c)3 are only eligible for Quick Grants and not eligible
for Partnership Grants.

YEF funds projects by organizations that address the concerns of Yahoo!
employees. The foremost concerns are:

   - Education & Youth
   - Community Building & Families
   - Environment
   - Animal Welfare (Only eligible for Quick Grant funding)

 These focus areas are determined by a survey conducted on all U.S. Yahoo!
employees.

 Projects YEF does not fund

The Yahoo! Employee Foundation does not fund the following groups or
expenses. Please review this list carefully. Your grant application will
not be accepted if the grant request includes funding for the following
items:

   - Health care organizations that do not have a community-building and
   families component (i.e., the organization serves only patients; it does
   not serve others)
   - General operating expenses or budgets for partnership grants, unless
   they're tied to identifiable program(s) or budget line item(s). The
   expenses include, but are not limited to, infrastructure, overhead, and
   furnishings. We do not fund building construction costs under any
   circumstances.
   - Organizations that redistribute YEF funds to other organizations for
   specific projects. (This redistribution of funds is re-granting.) YEF
   provides funding only to organizations that directly manage their projects.
   - Individuals
   - Scholarships
   - Endowment or capital campaigns
   - Sororal, fraternal, professional, or business organizations (unless
   the organization is sponsoring a program that's open to the entire
   community)
   - Organizations with religious affiliations (unless the program is free
   of religious references and open to the entire community without regard to
   religious beliefs)
   - Organizations or programs that discriminate on the basis of gender,
   race, color, religion, age, national origin, disability, sexual
   orientation, and any other classification protected by state or federal laws
   - Fundraisers such as annual fund drives, dinners, luncheons,
   walk-a-thons, tournaments, and fashion shows
   - Ongoing fundraising expenses in an organization
   - Costs already incurred
   - Projects that have not been approved before grant request was submitted
   - Research
   - Educational and arts organizations that do not serve a significant
   number of low-income or underserved* communities
   - Sports teams that do not have an education component serving primarily
   underserved* populations
   - Works in which there is no clear public benefit or charitable intent

 *Please note:* If no organization qualifies, the board reserves the right
to defer fund distribution to the following grant cycle.

** Underserved defnition:* Those communities in which people lack access to
programs, services, or resources due to geography, economic conditions,
cultural or ethnic background, and/or sociopolitical circumstances.
