Here's an interesting email that seems to pose some questions worth
pondering:

Hey Makerspace Urbana!

My name is William Halsey, and I am an MBA student at the University of
Tennessee. For one of our classes a group of us are working as consultants
to help a local makerspace grow. The group is called KnoxMakers and their
website is knoxmakers.org.

Currently they are struggling not only to attract members but also create a
diverse community. They admit that for now they are just thirty, middle-age
white guys.

While doing research I came across your website and the Make-a-tion event.
I wanted to inquire about how successful it has been for both participation
and bringing in new members. I would assume that it has been since you have
been doing it for three years.

Also, if you could give me any basic information such as
  - What methods you use to advertise the event
  - How you recruit people to lead the programs
  - Are most of the programs led by current members or people from the
community
  - Approximate costs

Also, if there is any other info that you would be willing to share it
would be appreciated or if you could just give me the name of someone I can
get in touch with.

A response can be sent to
  whalsey at vols.utk.edu -or-
  (865) 621-7582

If I for some reason can not answer the phone feel free to just leave a
response on the voice mail.

I appreciate your time and response. Let\'s keep the maker movement going!

Thanks,

- William Halsey
