Subject: [cchcc-l] CCHCC Encourages You to Attend the Town Hall Meeting on Protecting the Mahomet Aquifer!

Dear Friends,

We are taking a moment to acknowledge the great environmental work of
another group and to ask you to attend a very important Town Hall Meeting
on Protecting the Mahomet Aquifer - Thursday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the
auditorium of the Beckman Institute. More details about this important
meeting can be found at the end of this email.

CCHCC has always believed that one aspect of health care justice is a
healthy environment. People deserve to live in safe and healthy
neighborhoods with unpolluted water and soil and clean, fresh air.

That is why we joined with hundreds of affected residents in the 5th &
Hill Neighborhood to fight to clean up a toxic waste site in their
neighborhood and ensure that the rights of current and former residents are
protected. Now another threat to the health and safety of the people of
Champaign (and hundreds of other communities in Illinois) has surfaced.

The Mahomet Aquifer is a large collection of water, deep underground, that
provides clean drinking water for 17 counties in the State of Illinois.
This precious natural resource is being threatened by plans to allow PCB
chemicals to be dumped into the Clinton Landfill which sits directly over
the aquifer. PCB chemicals could find their way into the aquifer and
contaminate the drinking water for most of the State of Illinois.

PCB (Polychlorinated biphenyl) chemicals are extremely toxic and are able
to stay in the environment for a very long time. They stay around so long
that PCBs can travel up the food chain to harm humans, even if direct
exposure to these chemicals has not occurred. It is because of this that
PCB production was banned by the United States Congress in 1979.

There is now an effort to allow Clinton Landfill to accept these extremely
dangerous chemicals even though the landfill sits right above a drinking
water source for most of the State of Illinois, essentially creating an
environmental ticking time bomb.

WatchClintonLandfill and other environmental groups have taken this issue
head on. CCHCC supports their work to prevent PCBs from being dumped in the
Clinton Landfill as a matter of public health and health care justice.

There will be a town hall meeting this Thursday where consumers can come
out and make their voices heard. Lets protect the people of Illinois and
secure the future of our drinking water for years to come by saving the
Mahomet Aquifer from PCB contamination. The details for this important
meeting are below
