"The War on Terrorism": Long Term Issues and Implications
Tuesday, Oct. 23
7:00 - 9:00 p.m.
228 Natural History Building,
1301 W. Green St., Urbana
"The War on Terrorism" has so far led to new alliances involving countries
with different and, in some cases, conflicting interests. It has raised
questions about U.S. foreign policy in South Asia and the Middle East, the
Arab-Israeli and Pakistan-India conflicts, the proliferation of
non-conventional weapons, U.S. relations with Iran, and the issue of the
absence or weakness of democratic and civil society institutions in most
countries of the area.
Speakers:
Badredine Arfi, Political Science, UIUC
Hadi Esfahani, Economics, UIUC
Jamal Nassar, Political Science, UIUC
Cliff Singer, Nuclear Engineering and Director, ACDIS, UIUC
Moderator:

Cinema Studies would also to invite you the sixth screening of our South
Asian Families at Home and in the Diaspora: A Film Series.
My Son the Fanatic
7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, 24 October 2001
66 Library, 1408 W. Gregory, Urbana
FREE and Open to the Public. A Discussion will follow.
The son shouts at his father: "They live in pornography and filth and tell
us how backward we are." The son is first generation British, the father a
Pakistani taxi driver. "They" are the indigenous population of a once
industrial northern town. Hanif Kureishe's script covers the racial divide
between a politically awakened younger generation who speak English with a
Yorkshire accent and their parents who have adapted to the British ways of
waste. The boy's father has been driving his cab for 25 years. He has
gained the response of the locals because he doesn't treat them like his
son and his friends. The film is well written, and grapples with identity
issues at multiple levels.
