[rfu-automation] Re: Fwd: [RFU] Bring Free Speech Radio News to Your Community!

Danielle,

I'm forwarding this to our RFU-automation list, as it's the place
where decisions about automated content, including syndicated
programming, belongs.

I'm in several minds about this.

WEFT already carries FSRN locally, during the same time that we run
our public affairs block, so I would be loathe to simply duplicate
what WEFT does, particularly when there are so many great and unique
shows we are already bringing to the community during that slot, which
we would need to stop running, unless we dedicated more time to
syndicated programming, in place of local content.

There will be a cost to FSRN (though their pricing scheme is based on
station budget - I need to check what their rate would be for WRFU).
To date we've avoided for-cost external programming. The only
exception at present is that I'm exploring carrying Workers'
Independent News, if we can use WIN to leverage station underwriting -
in essence, if we can make a profit on running the show (in that case
we would be looking at spending $60/yr to gain $500+/yr). We're
currently running at a loss on 'ordinary' revenue, and can't easily
justify spending on program acquisition.

On the other hand, FSRN is high-quality, independent, news
programming, It would fit with the IMC vision and, as you note, IMC
members will be contributing to the program.

Andrew
