Greetings! :)
Just wanted to say a big thank you to all of you who were there last night for
Take Back the Night, in spite of the rain and everyone's busy schedules, to
make it a successful march for another year. We were on TV last night, we
should be getting a story in the U of I yearbook, and we'll have to wait till
Monday to see the Daily Illini article (but their editorial on Thursday was
pretty reasonable). Erica and Ashley, as spokeswomen, did a great job -- not
sure whom all they were interviewed by but there seemed to be quite a lot of
media present. I'll add whatever press we get at www.prairienet.org/tbtn/2004 .
Special thanks to the amazing speakers (Ariel, Ashley, Assata, Liz, Tina, Zoe
and the cheerleaders:)), Kelly for emceeing, RCS, everyone on security and
road-blocking, IDF/PRC (and WDAC) for lending us their gear, Liz's mom for
interpreting at the rally, Women's Programs for general and thorough support,
MASV, CAPP, and those who helped with planning in a major way (Erica, Ileana,
Katie, Liz, Michelle, Ross, Ashley/Sigma Gamma Rho, Sue, Zoe).
Finally, I wanted to say that if you're interested in the videotape of the
march (by Zoe and various others), we can have a tape-watching get-together :)
and also make more copies. We should also start putting together a list with
those who want to help organize TBTN next year (Cat who worked security
mentioned this idea last night, and I know from Ileana that several of you
were interested) -- I'm sure this will be quite useful for the SAAM Committee.
Thanks once again!!! I hope I didn't forget anyone (if I did please correct
me). Peace, and a good end of the semester and/or just spring :) to all,
Ruxandra.
PS: One thing we forgot about at the rally (I think) was to read the list of
cosponsors. These, in case you were wondering and didn't get a chance to read
the website or a soggy copy of the TBTN booklet last night:), ended up being:
Activist Forum, Amnesty International UIUC, Busey-Evans Hall Council, Campus
Greens, Champaign County Health Care Consumers, College Democrats, Feminist
Majority, Illinois Disciples Foundation, Lambda Tau Omega Sorority, Inc.,
McKinley Sexual Health Peer Educators, Men Against Sexual Violence, Persons
Assuming Control of Their Environment (PACE), Parkland College, Progressive
Resource/Action Cooperative, R.A.G.G., Rape Crisis Services, Red Roots, Sigma
Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., South Asian Collective, U of I Office of Women's
Programs, Women's Direct Action Collective, YWCA at the University of Illinois
PS: Sorry if you get this twice (it means you're on the listserv as well as on
one the smaller email lists:) ).
